Navi Mumbai Airport Leak Video Sparks Online Storm Ahead of Monsoon Season

A short 13-second video of water dripping from the ceiling inside the newly opened Navi Mumbai International Airport has drawn much attention and criticism on social media site X. The video (which was released on Thursday) appears to show water falling near Belt 5 in the baggage claim area while baggage handlers continue working in the background. An IndiGo flight display can also be seen in the video.

The airport’s preparedness for the upcoming monsoon season is questioned since it was opened just a few months ago. The airport was launched on December 25, 2025, and is operated by Adani Airport Holdings and was to be a major aviation hub with up to 20 million passengers a year and relieve Mumbai’s existing airport congestion.

What drew the attention of social media users is that the alleged leak occurred before the heaviest phase of Mumbai's monsoon arrived. Some users said if water seepage is already visible under relatively normal conditions, it could be worse in the coming weeks when there will be heavy rainfall.

The video soon went viral and netizens chimed in with criticism and humor. Some questioned the quality of construction and waterproofing measures at a brand-new international airport. And some joked that the dripping water was not a defect but rather an “architectural feature” inspired by famous indoor waterfalls seen at airports such as Singapore’s Changi Airport.

One viral comment sarcastically described the leak as a “budget version of Changi’s Rain Vortex,” while others joked that passengers were getting a complimentary monsoon experience before even stepping outside the terminal. Memes and edited images began to surface and the incident soon became a trending topic online.

Besides the humor, there were practical concerns about passenger inconvenience. Some questioned whether travelers who were affected by leaks, wet baggage, and/or operational problems would be compensated or refunded. Others pleaded with airport officials to act before the monsoon hit its peak.

A few users also criticized what they described as the tendency to inaugurate large infrastructure projects before all systems are fully tested in real-world conditions. This should be a wake-up call for authorities to conduct inspections and maintenance checks ahead of the rainy season, these people said.

As of now, neither airport authorities nor Adani Airport Holdings have publicly commented on the viral video. There have also been no official reports linking the incident to heavy rainfall on June 19.

While the authenticity and exact circumstances of the footage still have been debated online, the episode has certainly inspired the conversation on infrastructure quality, preparedness, and passenger experience for one of India’s new aviation gateways.
