Both cars were travelling from Pune into Mumbai and the accident suggests the danger of overdriving on one of India’s busiest highways. It’s now shown in video footage that investigators will have to take into account what caused the collision.

The Toyota Fortuner was going at high speed when it collided with the rear of a goods tempo moving in the same direction inside the tunnel. The crash caused extensive damage to the SUV and the drivers were trapped inside. Emergency response teams - highway police and rescue - rushed to the accident site immediately after the collision.

One person died immediately on the spot because of the impact and another passenger sustained serious injuries and was immediately transferred to a nearby hospital for treatment. Three other people in the Fortuner escaped with minor or no injuries, officials say. The identities of the victims of the crash were not released pending notification of their families.

All five occupants of the Fortuner were Bhumkar Chowk residents of Wakad, Pimpri-Chinchwad and were travelling to Mumbai when the accident took place. The investigation is under way to determine what was the purpose of their trip and if driver fatigue, speeding and low visibility inside the tunnel were factors that led to the collision.

The goods tempo involved in the accident was transporting vegetables and was moving along the expressway when it was hit from behind. The tempo driver survived, but officials will have to record his statement as part of the investigation. The collision caused temporary disruption to traffic in the tunnel during rescue operations and vehicle clearance.

The Missing Link section of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway is considered one of the most important infrastructure developments for the reduction of travel time and better connection among Maharashtra’s two major cities. The tunnel section has a wide variety of modern safety measures such as CCTV surveillance, emergency communication, fire safety mechanisms, ventilation systems, and monitoring infrastructure. CCTV footage of the collision was of particular use in this case.

The CCTV footage frame by frame will be examined to investigate the Fortuner’s speed, the movement of both vehicles before it hit, and whether any sudden changes in course could have caused the accident. The mechanics of both vehicles will also be examined, and forensic evidence from the crash site and skid marks and vehicle damage will be analysed to help reconstruct the sequence of events.

Experts say rear-end collisions on expressways are associated with speeding, insufficient following distance, distracted driving, or delayed braking. Tunnel areas are more dangerous as visibility can change rapidly when someone enters an enclosed area of the tunnel and reaction time is critical in enclosed areas. Drivers should always slow down, keep a safe distance from vehicles ahead, avoid sudden lane changes, and remain alert throughout their journey.

The Mumbai-Pune Expressway is a place with heavy traffic all year round, especially on weekends and holidays. Overspeeding remains one of the major causes of serious accidents on roadways in the state. Maharashtra authorities have repeatedly advised drivers to abide by speed limits, wear seat belts, and not use mobile phones while driving, and ensure vehicles are roadworthy to travel long distances.

Police immediately began a thorough investigation to determine if negligence or a violation of traffic laws caused the accident. In the future, police are to interview the surviving occupants of the SUV, take statements from witnesses, and check digital evidence (CCTV footage, vehicle data if available). The findings will help to determine the specific cause of the accident and whether legal action is required.

The tragic incident has once again highlighted the importance of responsible driving on high-speed corridors. Highway technology has been developed to make travel more efficient and safe, but the success of these highways ultimately revolves around the safety-driving habits of the drivers. Poor concentration or excessive speed will have a massive impact on everyone on the road.

As the investigation is ongoing, the identity of the victims, the health of the injured passenger, and analysis of the evidence will be released, the police said. The accident is yet another reminder that road safety standards must be followed and drivers must be more aware of the growing number of expressways in India.
