In a dramatic political turn, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned on Saturday after weeks of sustained pressure by a national student protest movement. The resignation follows a month-long relentless campaign by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) at Jantar Mantar that galvanized lakhs of aspirants and Gen Z youth after the scandalous NEET-UG paper leak.
Pradhan’s departure occurred just two weeks before the third round of high-level talks between government representatives and CJP delegates. The main demands of the agitating student collective were the immediate resignation of Pradhan, legal immunity for peaceful demonstrators, and financial compensation for the families of NEET aspirants who died by suicide. The Centre had concluded the legal issues and reviewed compensation arrangements, but it was still a non-negotiable condition for removing the minister.
In an open letter to the youth of India, Pradhan explained the reason for his departure:
"Consistent with anti-national forces should not take advantage of the situation that has arisen at Jantar Mantar and across the country, that the unity of the country remains intact, that the future of even a single student of India does not get entangled in legal complications, and that our children spend their time to studies and focus on building their careers -- I have submitted my resignation to Hon’ble Prime Minister."
High-level Huddle and Triumphant Reactions. Following the resignation, Union Home Minister Amit Shah held a strategy meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The top ministers J.P. Nadda and Jitendra Singh, who have led the student leadership in several rounds of discussion over the past few months, will brief Shah about the situation after the resignation.
The announcement brought an unbroken burst of jubilation at Jantar Mantar. CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke hailed the development as an unprecedented victory for grassroots democracy and student solidarity. Dipke told the crowd: “This is democracy. He has resigned... Remember, do not mess with cockroach.”
Political responses poured in from all sides. Opposition leaders like Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Arvind Kejriwal and NCP (SP) leader Sharad Pawar hailed the resilience of the country’s youth and framed the resignation of the minister as a testament to the unyielding power of collective public dissent against institutional apathy.
