The honour was bestowed upon the Prime Minister by the Paryaya Puttige Math seer, Sri Sugunendra Teertha Swamiji, during the Laksha Kanta Gita Parayana programme held at the historic Udupi Sri Krishna Math. The devotional gathering brought together nearly 1,00,000 participants, including students, monks, scholars, and devotees, for a mass recitation of the Srimad Bhagavad Gita.

A Visit of Deep Spiritual and Cultural Significance

The Prime Minister's visit to Udupi was marked by massive crowds and significant ceremonial events:

  • Felicitation and Honour: During the event, Sri Sugunendra Teertha Swamiji presented PM Modi with the title and honoured him with a 'raksha kavacha' bracelet and a traditional petha (headgear) adorned with peacock feathers, commonly associated with Lord Krishna. The seer also requested the Prime Minister to develop an 'Udupi Corridor' similar to the successful Kashi Corridor.
  • Gita Recitation: PM Modi participated actively in the devotional gathering, reciting verses from the 15th chapter of the Srimad Bhagavad-Gita—Purushothama Yoga—alongside thousands of devotees.
  • Inaugurations: The Prime Minister also inaugurated the Suvarna Tirtha Mantapa situated in front of the Krishna sanctum and dedicated the Kanaka Kavacha (golden cover) for the sacred Kanakana Kindi, the window through which the saint Kanakadasa is believed to have received the divine darshan of Bhagwan Krishna.
  • Traditional Welcome: PM Modi was welcomed by a large and enthusiastic crowd during a roadshow ahead of his visit to the Math. He held formal conversations with the Swamijis of the Ashta Maths (eight monasteries) of Udupi, paying homage to the 800-year-old tradition established by Sri Madhvacharya.

The conferring of the title "Bharata Bhagya Vidhata" underscores the spiritual and cultural recognition of the Prime Minister's leadership and vision by one of India's most important religious institutions.
