Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra launched a scathing attack on the centre, saying that the opposition is being deliberately held back from speaking in Parliament.
She called the situation deeply concerning as she said: “democracy is finished when elected representatives are not allowed to speak inside the country’s highest legislative institution.”
She made her comments as Parliament continues to be disrupted with opposition parties complaining that the government is unwilling to talk about national issues and its failure to allow debate on matters that are important. Speaking to reporters outside Parliament, Priyanka Gandhi said the opposition was elected by millions of Indians and has a constitutional responsibility to represent their voices.
All too frequently, she said, opposition members of parliament are not given a chance to participate in debates that are not only in line with Parliament but also violate democratic institutions and Parliament’s traditions.
She asked how democracy could work if Parliament became a place where only the ruling party’s views are heard. “If the opposition cannot speak, democracy is finished,” she said, alleging that the government was suppressing dissent rather than engaging in meaningful discussion.
The Congress leader also criticized what she said was a growing tendency in the party to use procedural tactics to avoid debates. Opposition leaders have argued that important issues governance, public welfare, and recent political developments need to be discussed in Parliament and not through a series of adjournments.
However, the BJP - the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party insists Parliament is governed by rules and procedures. Government leaders say the opposition is disrupting the House of Parliament with protests and slogans, and that this violates the House's business.
The latest exchange reflects the growing confrontation between the government and opposition during the ongoing Parliament session.
A number of opposition parties have come together on a number of issues and have urged the government to have more detailed talks and to take the blame.
