'Trust Me, Let's Go': Siya Goyal's Mother's Claim in Pune Murder Case Sparks Fresh Debate on Social Media

The murder case of Pune businessman Ketan Agarwal has taken a fresh turn after Siya Goyal's mother Pooja Goyal said it was Ketan on many occasions who asked for the trip to Lohagad Fort and he was later pushed to his death.

She added to the case that has already had her comment in an interview with India Today TV. The evidence is being investigated and the case remains under close investigation but her words have reignited conversations on social media about relationships, individual boundaries and accountability.

What did Siya Goyal's mother say?

Pooja Goyal said in India Today TV that her daughter initially had no interest in joining the trek and even asked her mother to convince Ketan to cancel the plan.

According to her, Siya told her:

"Mummy, Ketan is asking me to come for trekking, but I don’t want to go. Please ask him not to insist." Pooja Goyal also claimed that Ketan’s mother encouraged Siya to accompany him, saying he may have planned a birthday surprise.

She also said that Siya reminded Ketan that they were to travel to Mahabaleshwar the next day and suggested making another plan because the trek would leave them tired.

According to Pooja Goyal, Ketan said in their chat:

"Trust me a little, let’s go."

She said these conversations are still available on Siya’s mobile phone and can be verified by investigators.

The question that dominates social media

Before Pooja Goyal’s latest statement, one question was repeatedly raised by many people online and Ketan Agarwal’s father:

"If Siya didn’t want to marry, why didn’t she simply say 'No'?"

After her mother’s interview, that question has become even more prominent on social media platforms.

If you can allegedly commit such an extreme act, it should not have been too difficult to refuse to marry , some users say. The new evidence suggests that Ketan was in fact the one who persuaded Siya to come along with him and that the circumstances leading up to the trek are more complicated than was originally believed.

The issue of communication, consent, emotional pressure in relationships and how interpersonal conflict can take the form of tragedy has grown into a larger discussion.

A Debate beyond the criminal case.

If legal arguments are to be heard, what people would like to call a larger societal debate, rather than simply one.

Among the questions being discussed online are:

Why do some people have a hard time firmly refusing repeated requests from someone close to them? Can emotional persuasion make saying no more difficult in relationships? At what point does persuasion become pressure?

But while these questions are what keep people talking online, legal experts insist that they are separate from the criminal investigation.

Importantly, whether Ketan insisted on the trek or Siya initially resisted it does not by itself determine criminal liability. The investigation and the court proceedings will assess the evidence of the alleged murder based on the law.

Investigation Continues

The police are still investigating the reasons for Ketan Agarwal’s death, and digital evidence, witness statements and chat records may help piece together the events prior to the trek. The chats referred to by Pooja Goyal could be part of the investigation if submitted as evidence. The investigation will be based on forensic evidence, electronic records and witness testimony rather than public opinion, but as the case progresses, they say.

The Bigger Picture

In Pune, the investigation has been more than just a criminal case. It got to know about the relationship, communication and boundary respect.

But the legal outcome will ultimately depend on what evidence is in front of the court. And until then, most of the claims made by both sides are yet to be tested judicially.
