Pune residents woke up to a sudden dip in temperatures on April 2 to torrential rains and thunderstorms in several parts of the city. It was a surprise to change the weather and also to relieve the heat and disrupt it with waterlogging in a number of locations.
Local data and images shared on social media also indicate that although parts of Pune had heavy downpours, others recorded lighter showers. Rain and thunder and lightning caused traffic delays and made it difficult for commuters to move around.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has attributed the sudden change in weather to strong pre-monsoon activity. We expect that the same conditions will be in place for a couple of days. The IMD has predicted thunderstorms accompanied by rain for April 3 and for April 4 we expect lightning and gusty winds to reach 30-40 kmph in the afternoon and evening. This pattern is likely to continue until April 8.
The unseasonal rains are not limited to Pune city only but are affecting the whole district as well, and residents, parents and students in general are feeling insecure and concerned. Schools are still operating and there is always a question whether the government of Pune will make any announcement of closures as a precautionary measure.
There is no official order from the state government or local administration on school closures so far. Schools in Pune will be open on April 3 (Friday) and April 4 (Saturday). Parents are told to keep updated and contact the individual school administration directly.
Some schools could independently declare holidays, especially since Good Friday is on April 3 and Easter on April 5, which might mean longer breaks in some institutions.
School holidays are expected in April 2026.
A few holidays that could affect school schedules of students and parents should also be noted ahead of time:
- April 3 (Friday): Good Friday (gazetted holiday).
- April 5 (Sunday): Easter.
- April 14 (Tuesday): Ambedkar Jayanti (also coincides with regional festivals like Baisakhi and Vishu).
- April 15 (Wednesday): Bohag Bihu/Himachal Day (regional holidays).
- April 17 (Friday): Chandrashekhar Jayanti (select regions).
Although these dates are regularly observed, school closures can be different according to institutional policies and local government notifications.
Advisory for Parents and Students.
Because of the unpredictable weather, parents should track weather conditions and monitor updates closely in order to ensure children’s safety while traveling. Rain gear should be worn and waterlogged roads should be avoided.
But there’s no general holiday announcement at present, and unseasonal rains continued. The decision on closures will depend on weather conditions and the news and official advisories.
