Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi’s dramatic detention on Friday’s arrest of Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi for protesting near Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence in Delhi has triggered a fresh political storm, with videos of the incident spreading rapidly across social media.
The dramatic scenes went to the headlines after Rahul Gandhi, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other Opposition leaders staged a sit-in near the Prime Minister’s official residence at Lok Kalyan Marg. The protest was organised over the police action against students who had marched towards Parliament over alleged irregularities in the NEET examination system.
Rahul Gandhi and other Congress leaders were subsequently detained by Delhi Police after refusing to leave the protest site. Pictures of police taking the Leader of the Opposition from the area quickly became a popular talking point online, with supporters viewing the detention as a symbol of resistance and critics calling the Congress a form of political confrontation over NEET.
A day after a huge protest by the students over what they say is examination irregularities and demands for accountability in the education system, the protest is also taking place. Protesters are also demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and say the government is failing to deal with the examination system.
Rahul Gandhi is also on the attack on the Centre to hold it accountable for the police's conduct against protesting students. The Congress has said students were expressing legitimate concerns about their future and that the government should answer questions over examination security and alleged irregularities.
The opposition's protest close to the prime minister’s residence took the political confrontation to an extreme level. Congress leaders demanded answers from the government, and a response from those responsible for the alleged crackdown on students.
The government, however, has rejected the Opposition’s approach. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan accused Rahul Gandhi and Congress of using students as “political tools” and choosing “political spectacle over democratic debate”. Pradhan said the Centre was ready to discuss the NEET issue in Parliament and address genuine concerns raised by students.
The government also maintained parliamentary debate is the appropriate forum for talking about it.
The detention has nevertheless given the Opposition fresh political momentum. Rahul Gandhi’s supporters have rallied online, as videos from the protest are receiving widespread attention. As of now, there is no way to independently verify the number of views on Instagram, Facebook, YouTube Shorts and X.
The episode has further enhanced Rahul Gandhi’s stature as an Opposition leader who is ready to fight his political battle away from Parliament. His critics, however, say that the protest outside the Prime Minister’s residence was not in the spirit of security arrangements and distracted from parliamentary discussion.
The political battle is now moving beyond the original NEET controversy. Congress is calling in for accountability and the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan, and the government is saying the Opposition is using students’ concerns for political advantage and will continue to make the issue a major flashpoint in Monsoon Session.
One thing is clear though: Rahul Gandhi’s detention has turned an already heated issue of NEET and student protests in the recent past into one of the biggest political confrontations in Parliament’s ongoing session.
