A video of the speech in which Khera’s words were circulated has attracted a huge amount of attention on social media, and supporters welcomed it and opponents doubt how long will it take for the prediction to come true.
Khera is chairman of the Congress media and publicity department and one of the party's leading spokespersons and made the comments recently talking about Rahul Gandhi. He referred to Rahul Gandhi in highly complimentary terms and saw him as a leader with a strong connection with people. It was a message of confidence in Gandhi’s future and a reflection of the Congress leadership’s move to position him as their principal national face.
But the comments soon became fodder for online satire. Social media users recalled similar political predictions and declarations made over the years about Rahul Gandhi (particularly since 2014 when the Congress suffered a major setback in Lok Sabha elections). The party has been in opposition at the national level since then, struggling to rebuild its organisation and expand its electoral presence.
Some users seized on Khera’s remarks to respond with memes that suggested the wait for Rahul Gandhi-led governments has become unusually long. They used the popular internet joke “it’s been 84 years” to mock the repeated expectations about Gandhi’s potential rise to the Prime Minister’s office. Even so, Rahul Gandhi is still one of the most prominent opposition leaders in the country. He has tried to reframe his political image in the last several years through mass public appeals, parliamentary interventions and campaigns that have been driven by unemployment, economic inequality, social justice and institutional accountability. Bharat Jodo Yatra and Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra were an especially significant effort to reach out to voters in different parts of the country.
Congress has also been putting more emphasis on younger voters and grassroots engagement in order to build the party. So statements from leaders such as Khera are not just expressions of admiration, but part of the political narrative in which Rahul Gandhi is the party’s future.
Gandhi’s political journey has been marked by both elections that have been lost and elections that have been won, as well as ones that have been restored. His defeat in the 2019 Lok Sabha election from Amethi was a major political blow, but he remained in Wayanad at the time. The Congress sought to regain its position and the party’s performance in 2024 Lok Sabha elections generated some momentum compared to 2014 and 2019 elections.
Khera’s comments have also led to an exploration of the difference between popularity among party workers and the much more complex process of winning a national election. Calling a political leader the “king of hearts” is ultimately a political assessment, while becoming Prime Minister depends on parliamentary numbers, alliances, voter support and the ability to transform political campaigns into electoral victories.

For Congress, maintaining Rahul Gandhi’s status as a national opposition leader is still an important part of its political strategy. The party still sees Rahul Gandhi as a leader that could take on the Bharatiya Janata Party and PM Modi on national issues and can stand against them. But Congress has to do so much more than give it leadership and must focus on organisational building and state-level alliances and stronger electoral strategies.
The response to Khera’s statement thus illustrates the polarized nature of Indian politics today. Supporters see such declarations as a sign of confidence in a person they think will eventually lead the country, while opponents see it as just another example of political rhetoric that has not been translated into national electoral success.
As Congress continues to cement its political position, Rahul Gandhi’s long-term ambitions are likely to remain a significant topic of discussion. Khera’s comments have added another layer to that conversation, while at the same time reinforcing the party’s confidence in Gandhi and providing social media users with new material for political satire.
