Reliance Jio and T-Mobile Achieve World’s First 5G Standalone Roaming Connection

Reliance Jio and T-Mobile have become the first to establish what they say is the first 5G Standalone (SA) roaming connection worldwide. The accomplishment was made on September 21, 2026 and is achieved by interoperability with Syniverse’s connectivity platform.

The breakthrough is important as 5G Standalone technology operates using a dedicated 5G core network rather than an underlying 4G LTE core. Compared to 5G NSA architecture which combines 5G radio technology with existing 4G infrastructure, SA 5G is designed to provide the network capabilities associated with the full evolution of 5G, including lower latency, greater flexibility and support for massive connectivity.

The new roaming capability will enable T-Mobile customers to benefit from 5G SA connectivity internationally. So the Jio collaboration is very significant for cross-border connectivity between two separate 5G networks. T-Mobile and Jio said the partnership could give way for the expansion of international 5G roaming capabilities in the future.

The achievement was made possible by Syniverse, whose global mediation and connectivity platform enabled secure interconnection between the networks. This interoperability is an important technical requirement for international roaming because customers travelling between countries need their home network and the visited network to communicate securely while maintaining connectivity and service authentication.

5G SA roaming will also have implications beyond traditional smartphone use. According to the companies, the technology can support applications that need high-performance and stable connectivity (Internet of Things (IoT) services, real-time communications and immersive technologies). The architecture could also provide a basis for future enterprise services that rely on more responsive and flexible mobile networks.

For overseas travellers, the benefit of this development is the ability to have a consistent 5G experience when traveling from one country to another. Traditional international roaming can involve linking different network technologies and architectures. Interoperable 5G SA roaming will simplify the transition between participating networks while still maintaining the functionality of standalone 5G.

T-Mobile has been developing its standalone 5G capabilities for several years. The company announced in 2020 the first nationwide commercial standalone 5G network in the USA. Faster speeds, lower latency and more reliable connections were among the capabilities enabled by the standalone architecture T-Mobile had mentioned earlier.

The latest development also builds on earlier industry efforts to establish 5G SA roaming. In 2023 T-Mobile and Deutsche Telekom Global Carrier were able to test commercial 5G SA roaming with participating operators and this is a manifestation of industry efforts to create international roaming based on standalone architecture. The Jio collaboration is another step towards interoperability of commercial 5G SA networks across borders.

Jio's 5G network integration is also an important point for Reliance Jio to prove to the world that it is a successful network integration in the international connectivity ecosystem. Jio is positioning 5G SA as part of its network strategy and interoperability with an international operator like T-Mobile means that the network will be able to contribute to next-generation roaming services.

The technology could eventually be relevant for both consumers and businesses. Travellers will benefit from better international connections and businesses may use 5G SA services for applications that require reliable, low-latency communication across borders.

However, the kind of roaming services, plans and benefits that customers will get will depend on commercial agreements, supported devices, network coverage and operator policies.

The Jio-T-Mobile achievement is more than a technical accomplishment. It is emblematic of the industry’s move to interconnected standalone 5G networks capable of supporting international mobility. And as more operators develop 5G SA and set up compatible roaming arrangements, the technology could gradually open up the door for seamless cross-border connectivity.

The companies’ announcement is a crucial step in the future of 5G roaming and it is the first time in the case of Jio, T-Mobile and Syniverse to show that different networks can work together to connect 5G across the border. The development could be a foundation for future international services based on faster, more responsive and flexible mobile networks.
