India finally opened its gold medal account at the Asian Games 2026 after Harmanpreet Kaur-led women's cricket team dominated Sri Lanka in the final. The 147-run victory not only gave India its first gold of the Aichi-Nagoya Games but also helped the country move up to eighth place in the overall medal standings.
India entered the fourth day of competition with 6 medals and was still waiting for a gold. The women's cricket team's strong victory gave it that position. India now has one gold, four silver and two bronze medals, taking its total to seven.
The Indian women's team made 216/3 after being asked to bat. Smriti Mandhana scored 79 runs, while Shafali Verma contributed 48. Richa Ghosh ended with a big-match finish on 49 off 22 deliveries.
Sri Lanka was not able to build a response in the chase and was bowled out for 69 in 15.4 overs. Deepti Sharma led India's bowling attack with 3 wickets and Shafali Verma and Shreyanka Patil each took two wickets. The complete victory helped India to retain the women's cricket title won at the last Asian Games.

China is still in the top spot and has 53 medals, including 32 gold, 13 silver and 8 bronze. Japan is second with 46 medals, including 11 gold, 16 silver and 19 bronze. South Korea is third with 27 medals, including 6 gold, four silver and 17 bronze.
Kazakhstan is fourth with 12 medals, including 6 gold medals, and Thailand has six medals with 4 golds. Hong Kong, China has also won 12 medals, including three gold, five silver and 4 bronze medals. Tajikistan is seventh with 4 medals, including 2 golds.
India’s seven medals are currently on top of Uzbekistan, which has one gold, four silver and one bronze. But the Asian Games medal table can change rapidly as competitions go on and more medals are awarded in different disciplines.
India still has several opportunities to add to its medal count. The men’s badminton team has already secured a medal and Roshibina Devi has also secured a medal for the country. Boxing, wrestling and men’s cricket are some of the other disciplines that could contribute to India’s medal count as the Games progress.
The men's cricket competition is particularly important for India, and the team will have another chance to compete for gold. India will also build on its performances in shooting and other combat sports throughout the competition.
For now, the women’s cricket team’s victory is a big achievement in India’s Asian Games 2026 campaign. The gold took India under the spotlight and placed it in the top eight of the medals list. And with a few medals left to play, India’s position will change even more as the Aichi-Nagoya Games go on.
