Gujarat's Right to Education (RTE) admission process has been officially started for the academic year 2026–27. Online applications will be available from 4th April to 17th April 2026. The state is currently home to more than 84,000 seats for Class 1 students in private schools. And this is because the scheme is for children from economically weaker and middle‑class families to get a good education in private schools.
The RTE Act ensures that a percentage of seats in private schools are reserved for children who may not otherwise be able to afford such education. In Gujarat this initiative has been running successfully for several years and each year thousands of families apply. The 2026 admission cycle is different from the previous year.
One of the major changes is the priority rules. Prior to this new year, children from anganwadis were given preference. This year, reserved categories will be prioritized so that children from socially disadvantaged groups can receive more opportunities with access. Another innovation is the ability for parents to select the preferred school shift (morning or afternoon) at the time of application, which is an additional option.
The application is conducted entirely online and parents need to submit all required documents before the deadline. They must provide proof of residence, income certificate, birth certificate of the child and caste certificate if necessary. Once the application window is closed, seats will be allocated according to a lottery system to ensure fairness.
The number of seats has been reduced slightly from 94,000 to 84,000 this year. A decrease is expected but the government has promised that the system will be transparent and accessible. Parents should fill out details carefully, because incomplete or incorrect details can lead to a rejection.
Families have a fundamental opportunity to get their children an education, and that is what this scheme is all about. It is a commitment for schools to be inclusive and equal (to students and teachers) and for the state to provide education to every child regardless of financial background.
The RTE Gujarat 2026 admission process is not just about filling seats – it is about shaping futures. By opening doors to private schools for children from lower castes who are not privileged, the government is reinforcing the notion that education is a right, and not a privilege.
