Chandam Wangchuk, a well-known scientist, innovator, and environmental activist, was discharged from Gurugram’s Medanta Hospital on Sunday after nearly a week of medical supervision and recovery after a 26-day indefinite hunger strike that lasted at Jantar Mantar in Delhi, said he was feeling much better and slowly returning to a normal diet as his body started to recover.
When he makes his way back home to Ladakh, Wangchuk will visit Rajghat to pay his respects and homage to Mahatma Gandhi (as he did at the memorial right before he started the protest).
Recovery and Hospitalization Journey
Wangchuk’s health deteriorated dramatically during his long protest in support of students who were protesting against alleged irregularities and question paper leaks in competitive exams like the NEET UG. After an indefinite fast beginning on June 28, he was forcibly taken to Safdarjung Hospital and he later accused the authorities of putting him in a very severe detention condition. After a successful legal appeal filed in Delhi High Court by his legal team and family, he was taken under security to Medanta Hospital for specialized multi-specialty critical care.
Wangchuk was treated with an integrated approach, including internal medicine and critical care, Medanta Hospital health bulletins said. After discharge, his vital signs were within normal ranges and he was declared stable and alert and advised to keep up with follow-up on an outpatient basis.

The 36-day agitation is over. Wangchuk's dismissal marks the end of an entire student and political movement in the capital. The protests, organized by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), ended following major political developments, mainly the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan as Union Education Minister and written assurances from the Central Government on examination system reforms and protections for peaceful protesters.
Wangchuk expressed his gratitude to the supporters all over the country who supported him and helped in making the movement so successful. With his strength in place and his demands now being made through political dialogue, the activist will leave the capital behind and return to the mountains of Ladakh.
