Starbucks India Sets Sights on 8,000 Stores, Aiming to Match Its Massive China Footprint

Starbucks is preparing for a big expansion in India with its joint venture with Tata Consumer Products (TCPL) that will see the coffee chain reach around 8,000 stores in India. The ambitious long-term vision would put India’s Starbucks footprint on a scale comparable to the huge presence in China.

The 8,000-store figure was highlighted by Tata Consumer Products Chair N. Chandrasekaran, who said the company believes there is strong room for Starbucks to grow in the Indian market. Tata Starbucks has around 500 outlets, so the proposed long-term scale would be a sprawling expansion from the existing scale.

The expansion comes as Tata Starbucks is now ready to accelerate store openings after about two years of rethinking its business model. The company has seen four straight quarters of same-store sales growth, and management has come to believe in aggressive expansion.

India is becoming a major Starbucks opportunity.

The rapidly changing café culture in India is one of the reasons for the expansion strategy. Big urbanisation in India, rising disposable incomes, a growing young customer base and high demand for premium beverages have given organised coffee chains a great opportunity.

Tata Starbucks has already expanded beyond India’s largest metropolitan markets, and as the company expands, it’s likely to invest in increasing store density in existing cities and expanding into new ones.

TCPL management said recently that the company is looking to add 50 to 100 stores per year, and the much higher 8,000-store goal is more a long-term goal than an immediate target.

From 500 Stores to 8,000

The scale of the proposed expansion is striking. Tata Starbucks currently has about 500 stores, so to reach 8,000 would require the company to add thousands of locations over time.

The company had already announced a goal of reaching 1,000 stores by 2028 and expanding its workforce and more Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities.

The new 8,000-store goal is much more than that earlier one and much more of an analysis of India's potential market.

Chandrasekaran called the Starbucks business a high-potential opportunity and said that discussions with Starbucks Corporation indicate much room for expansion in India.

Stronger performance gives expansion Confidence

The new expansion plans follow a period in which Tata Starbucks reassessed its business model. Management reviewed store sizes, capital expenditure per outlet, and beverage pricing in the last 18-24 months.

The strategy appears to be working, and the joint venture has seen four consecutive quarters of same-store sales growth. Tata Starbucks is now moving forward to grow the pace of expansion again.

TCPL’s business also became EBITDA positive in FY26, the chairman of TCPL said, a huge development and a sign of how profitable the business is and quicker in expansion.

Can India ever match China's Starbucks scale?

China is currently one of Starbucks’ largest international markets, with around 8,000 stores. The prospect of the same number in India is a demonstration of the size of the opportunity Tata Starbucks believes exists in India.

But matching China’s store count would require an extensive expansion beyond India’s current metropolitan-heavy footprint. The company would have to penetrate hundreds of additional cities and neighbourhoods while adapting its formats and pricing to different consumer segments.

Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities are therefore likely to play a more central role in Starbucks India’s long-term strategy.

The expansion might also create job opportunities in retail, food services, supply chains, logistics and coffee production. And more stores would mean more trained employees and infrastructure at work.

For consumers, a bigger Starbucks footprint may be easier to access, especially in emerging cities, where premium café culture is still developing.

The move confirms that India is no longer just Starbucks’ emerging market but a possible global market for the company.

With only 500 stores today and an eventual target of 8,000, the road ahead is certainly long. With Tata Starbucks having seen sales momentum come to a head and expansion going ahead, India’s coffee market is likely to undergo a major change.
