A 60 year old woman from Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh has died after having tested positive for H1N1, also known as swine flu. She died at a private hospital in Indore on Wednesday evening.
The woman was identified as Saroj Nagar in Ujjain. She fell ill on July 31 and, in turn, went to hospital after her situation deteriorated, said her doctor.
Her samples were sent for testing and doctors confirmed H1N1 infection on August 3. She remained under treatment for approximately 16 days before her death. Tests apparently ruled out influenza B and COVID 19.
The case was reported as Madhya Pradesh's first swine flu death of the season. Health officials started gathering information and monitoring in the area after the death.
Swine flu is caused by influenza A viruses, including the H1N1 virus. It mainly impacts the respiratory system and can cause symptoms similar to seasonal flu.
Most people recover from influenza but the infection can become serious, particularly in people at higher risk of complications.
What are the common symptoms of Swine Flu?
Swine flu can look like an ordinary flu infection at first glance. Common symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache and tiredness. Some people may also have a runny or blocked nose.
Health symptoms can be rapidly developing and people should be on the lookout for symptoms quickly if they suddenly start feeling unwell.
Fever is one of the common symptoms. It might occur along with chills, body pain and significant tiredness.
A cough and sore throat can also occur because H1N1 mainly affects the respiratory system.
Some people have headaches and muscle or body aches. These symptoms can make you feel very weak and uncomfortable.
In some cases, people may also experience digestive symptoms such as nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea. These are typically seen in children but can also occur in adults.
These symptoms do not necessarily mean that a person has swine flu. Other viruses and respiratory infections may cause similar symptoms.
A doctor could recommend testing based on the person’s symptoms, medical history and local disease activity.
The most important thing is being able to recognize when flu symptoms are beginning to get serious.
The Severe Swine Flu Warning Signs That You Should Not Ignore
Breathing difficulty is one of the most important warning signs that a flu infection may have become serious.
A person who is short of breath, has difficulty breathing or persistent chest discomfort should quickly seek medical help.
Other symptoms of severe weakness, confusion, dizziness or difficulty staying awake may also be present.
A person who initially seems to be recovering but suddenly develops worse symptoms should also be evaluated by a doctor.
Persistent or worsening fever, severe cough and increasing breathing problems should not be treated as a normal seasonal flu without medical advice.
People with existing health conditions may need particular care. Older adults and people with conditions affecting the lungs, heart or immune system face a higher risk of complications from influenza.
Pregnant women and young children can be more susceptible to serious flu complications.
The recent Ujjain case has emphasized the importance of identifying symptoms early. Saroj Nagar had no known underlying illness, but her health deteriorated after she fell ill with the infection.
Health officials are monitoring the situation after her death.
Swine flu spreads through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes or talks. Contact with an infected person can increase the chance of transmission.
Simple precautions can minimize the risk of infection. People who are unwell should avoid close contact with others and cover their mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
Handwashing a lot more frequently and not just once a day is also very useful to prevent respiratory infections.
People with flu symptoms should avoid going to crowded places if they have fever or a persistent cough.
It’s not recommended to take antibiotics without medical advice. Antibiotics do not cure viral infections like influenza.
Doctors may prescribe antiviral medicines for some patients– in particular for those at higher risk or those with severe symptoms. These medicines work best when started early, so people who are very sick can call a healthcare professional if they feel poorly.
The death in Ujjain is a reminder that influenza shouldn’t always be dismissed as a minor illness.
At the same time, there is no need for unnecessary panic. Almost all people recover from flu and the early recognition of certain symptoms is key to identifying severe symptoms.
Anyone having difficulty breathing, chest pain, confusion, extreme weakness or rapidly worsening symptoms should seek medical care.
The Ujjain case is being monitored by health officials at the moment although the infection is being studied and the situation is being controlled in the affected area.
Fever, cough and body aches can be common flu symptoms, but breathing difficulty and sudden worsening of health require immediate attention.
