A private bus overturned on Ananthagiri Ghat Road in Telangana’s Vikarabad district on Saturday morning, October 3, killing at least four women and several passengers, as it went down. The bus was carrying about 50 to 54 people who were travelling from Kesaram village near Patancheru in Sangareddy district to Chintakunta village in Dharur mandal of Vikarabad to attend a funeral.
The accident happened as the bus travelled along the downhill stretch of the Ananthagiri Hills. The driver lost control of the vehicle while negotiating the ghat road, the initial report indicated, and the bus went off the road and overturned. Three people were reported dead, but later police and local authorities put the death toll at four.
Several passengers were injured in the crash with some reported to be seriously injured. Seven people were among those who were seriously injured as the report said, but other reports also indicated more people were hurt in the accident. It was still to be seen how the other passengers were treated and further medical treatment was to be arranged if needed to remedy the situation of the injured in a matter of days to come," said one news release from the police and medical staff.
Local residents and passers-by came to the accident site first and rescued passengers trapped in the overturned vehicle. Police, emergency teams and ambulances arrived at the site later and worked for relief. The injured passengers were admitted to government hospitals such as Vikarabad Government Hospital for treatment.
Vikarabad Superintendent of Police Sneha Mehra visited the accident site and evaluated the rescue operation. She visited injured passengers at the government hospital and directed medical teams to provide necessary treatment. Specialised or super-specialised care (not to mention all-round, specialized care) will be offered at higher medical centres, officials said.
The exact cause of the accident is still being studied. Initial reports indicated that the driver lost control while descending the ghat road and some also mentioned brake failure. But the mechanical issue has not been identified as the final cause and police are investigating the circumstances of the crash.
The accident caused the Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy to express grief over the loss of life and to express his deepest sympathies to the families of the deceased persons. The Chief Minister asked the state Chief Secretary to coordinate relief measures and ensure the injured were treated as well as the best possible medical treatment.

The group was on a group funeral for that day, and what was supposed to be a trip to Chintakunta turned into a huge tragedy. Rescue, medical and investigation of the accident continued throughout the day in the country as authorities fought to establish the full facts of the accident and to assist families of victims.
Ananthagiri Ghat Road, located in Ananthagiri Hills of Vikarabad district, has winding hill stretches. The accident has once again been seen to heighten the dangers in the operation of steep and curved ghat roads when a large number of passengers are travelling.
With the death toll up to four in later reports, authorities will continue to monitor the injured passengers and investigate the reason behind the bus overturning. Details on the victims, the status of the patients under treatment and the police investigation will be revealed as the investigation goes forward.
