Aman Sehrawat added another gold medal to India's impressive campaign at the 2026 Asian Games after winning the men's freestyle 57kg wrestling category on Saturday, October 3. The Indian wrestler won the gold medal on the last day of the Aichi-Nagoya Games and marked another accomplishment in his growing international career.
Sehrawat came to the Asian Games as one of India’s most prominent wrestling medalists. The Olympic bronze medallist had already clinched his place in the gold-medal match after a remarkable comeback in the semifinal earlier in the day. He was awarded another gold medal in the title match later on as India's athletes continued to shine in all the sports.
Aman Sehrawat Makes Strong Start In 57kg Category
Aman Sehrawat's run to the Asian Games gold medal included a series of commanding performances in the men's freestyle 57kg category. He first emerged victorious over Japan's Yamato Ogawa in the quarterfinals.
The Indian wrestler continued his impressive run in the quarterfinal, defeating Kazakhstan's Nurdanat Aitanov to move into the last four. His performances showed his ability to maintain control against opponents from different wrestling backgrounds and styles.
The semifinal proved to be his biggest test of the day. Sehrawat faced Tajikistan’s Aiaal Belolyubskii and was 2-6 down after the first period. Rather than let the deficit derail his momentum, the Indian produced a spectacular turnaround in the second period.
Sehrawat scored 12 points in the second period and limited his opponent’s chances, while completing a 14-8 victory. The comeback put him in the final of the Asian Games and guaranteed him at least a silver medal.
From Hangzhou Bronze To Asian Games Gold
Sehrawat's latest accomplishment is also an improvement on his previous Asian Games result. At the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games, he won a bronze medal in the men's 57kg category.
The wrestler returned to the continental competition with an opportunity to change the colour of his medal, and his performance in Aichi-Nagoya provided that breakthrough. Sehrawat was one victory away from upgrading his previous bronze to gold before the final, reports said.
His performance also marks the next big step in a career that already includes an Olympic medal. Sehrawat took bronze at the 2024 Paris Olympics as one of India's top wrestlers in the lighter freestyle categories.
Dramatic Semifinal Set Up Gold Medal Clash
The semifinal against Belolyubskii was very important because of the way Sehrawat reacted to pressure. He had to change the momentum of the contest quickly.
His second-period performance changed the match. The 12-point burst not only wiped out the deficit but also gave him enough separation to win 14-8. That sent him to the final against North Korea's Chong Song Han.
The final was another tough challenge for Sehrawat. Han is an established name in Asian wrestling and had already won big continental events. So this match brought two accomplished wrestlers together in one of the most watched matches of India’s final day wrestling schedule.
India Continues Strong Asian Games Wrestling Campaign
Aman's gold medal also boosts India's wrestling success in the 2026 Asian Games. Indian wrestlers had already shown some good results in freestyle and other categories earlier in the competition.
On the same day as Aman’s title match, Antim Panghal also reached the women’s 53kg final. She defeated China’s Jin Zhang 6-1 in the semifinal after coming from behind to earn a place in the gold-medal match.
Other Indian wrestlers also participated in medal contests. Deepak Punia moved into the bronze medal bout in the men's 97kg category after losing the semifinal to Uzbekistan’s Sherzod Poyonov, and Sagar Jaglan is also in bronze medal-winning form in the men’s 74kg category.
Aman Sehrawat's Gold Adds To India's Final-Day Push
The 2026 Asian Games have seen India winning medals in many classes and disciplines in a variety of events in the country, and wrestling has been a key part of the country's medal programme so far. The final day featured several Indian medal opportunities in wrestling, archery, hockey, cricket, and other sports.
Aman's success came alongside India's bid to finish the Games with a strong medal tally. India had already won medals on the last day in a number of disciplines, and the country's athletes were still competing for gold, silver, and bronze medals.
For Sehrawat, this is a big deal because it consolidates his bronze medal from the Asian Games and Olympic bronze. His comeback victory in the semifinal showed his ability to recover from a very difficult position, while his gold medal completed a memorable campaign in the men's 57kg freestyle category.
The Asian Games 2026 gold also strengthens Sehrawat's position among India's top wrestlers and gives the country another big wrestling success on the closing day of the Aichi-Nagoya Games.
