The controversy started after a DMK protest meeting in Thanjavur when Udhayanidhi Stalin told the party members about the Cauvery water dispute. Political leaders were quick to accuse DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin of delivering offensive double entendres and vulgar innuendos about a woman public figure.
From complaints from aggrieved parties, the Thanjavur East Police filed a case against the opposition leader. Police went to Udhayanidhi Stalin's house and interviewed him, and laws were passed and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act and Information Technology Act were used by the law enforcement authorities. This immediately led to protests by hundreds of DMK workers and loyal supporters who gathered outside his home to oppose the police action.
The ruling administration was under intense pressure because the TVK went to the National Commission for Women in a different way and said it would not take the matter at face value. Calling the remarks very disturbing, offensive and objectifying, the party called upon the Women’s Rights Commission to take immediate action and send notices to the opposition leader. TVK representatives also announced the launch of nationwide demonstrations.
At the same time, the Bharatiya Janata Party joined the condemnation. Senior BJP leaders like Chief Information Commissioner Narayanan Thirupathy, chief of the party, and others in parliament said the remarks are ‘obscene and shameful’ and that legal action against such political rhetoric should take place.
The DMK vehemently defended its leader, calling the police action a politically motivated move by the government to silence the opposition and obstruct his participation in the ongoing Assembly session. The friction also resonated at the national level, DMK parliamentarians brought the matter to Parliament in the name of Rajya Sabha MP P. Wilson who filed a formal notice under Rule 267 in order to be able to have an urgent discussion on the crisis at hand.
