Udhayanidhi Stalin Attacks CM Vijay Over Personal Life During Tamil Nadu Assembly Debate

As Deputy Chief Minister and DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin launched a scathing attack on Chief Minister Vijay, who has not only said some political things but also said some controversial things about his personal life, in Tamil Nadu's Legislative Assembly, a bitter political conflict erupted.

The heated exchange occurred in the Governor’s address, where Chief Minister Vijay defended his government’s policies and accused previous governments of misusing public funds. DMK legislators immediately protested the comments and sought evidence to buttress them.

In response, Udhayanidhi Stalin immediately criticised Vijay’s comments on the recent farmers’ protests. The Chief Minister had said opposition parties were in control of the protests and they were behind them, Udhayanidhi said. Udhayanidhi dismissed the claim, arguing that it was inappropriate to dismiss farmers’ problems by characterising such demonstrations as political rather than farmers’ protests.

The debate escalated further when Udhayanidhi went from policy to Vijay’s personal affairs. His point was that if the Chief Minister’s comments were not fit for the dignity of the Assembly, he did say something about a family court case between Vijay and his wife, Sangitha Sornalingam.

Sangitha Sornalingam had filed a petition in December 2025 before the Chengalpattu Family Court seeking the dissolution of her 27-year marriage. It is still pending, and the next hearing in the case has been scheduled for August 7. Speaking to the press, Udhayanidhi said that “the story of a wife searching for her husband in the Chengalpattu court is known to everyone in Tamil Nadu,” a statement that got a lot of attention inside and outside the Assembly.

The comments drew criticism from political observers who argued that personal issues should be kept separate from legislative debate, and the public issues could not be discussed on the ground. In many quarters, the comments were seen as part of the mounting tension between the government of the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) led by Vijay and the opposition DMK’s growing rivalry.

Vijay had earlier accused the previous governments of allowing public money collected in the name of political parties to be misused. His administration would recover such funds and make governance transparent, he said. This was followed by DMK legislators who protested, with Udhayanidhi Stalin calling for the Chief Minister to give solid evidence to back up the allegations.

As the Assembly got heated up, the Speaker intervened and advised opposition members not to disturb the Chief Minister as he was speaking to the Governor. DMK members continued the demonstrations and disrupted the proceedings.

Vijay didn’t let it get in his way; he continued with his speech and promised that the TVK government would behave differently from previous regimes. He said that his government would not tolerate corruption or mismanagement of public money, and he would conduct his administration in terms of transparency and accountability.

As the TVK and DMK are going to continue to attack each other in the coming days, the Assembly debate will only further fuel the political tension. The clash also reveals the increasing involvement of personal issues in political discussion and the boundaries of political criticism and what is, for example, acceptable in parliamentary debates.
