The horrific killing took place on Wednesday, next to Umri village and shocked families and local people even further. The victim is Deepak Sharma, a resident of Greater Noida. Reports said Deepak had travelled to Umri village, Gonda district, following his mother-in-law’s death to attend the funeral and assist the grieving family.

Witnesses claimed that Deepak had gone into the river for a ritual bath, after preparing the funeral pyre near the banks of the Saryu River, which is practised after funeral services in many places in India. But a massive crocodile allegedly attacked him suddenly, moments after he crossed into the water.

But according to local authorities, the reptile seized Deepak’s head with its powerful jaws and dragged him deep into the river within moments, leaving people sitting on the bank of the river horror-stricken. Resident Rajesh Shukla said local people reportedly warned Deepak not to enter the river since he'd seen crocodile attacks and sightings in past in the area where the creatures attacked.

After being repeatedly warned about the danger, he got into the water, resulting in the horrific event. People in mourning ran quickly toward the river after hearing Deepak’s screams. Dozens of people nearby tried searching for him in the water, but no young man could be found.

Not long after the event, police personnel and revenue department staff showed up, there being a monitoring operation in town; They even called the area for rescue work. Considering the seriousness of the case and the difficult conditions in the river, local authorities have called in teams from Lucknow’s state disaster response force (SDRF) to enhance the search.

Searching the riverbanks and surrounding sections of the Saryu River, Rescue is currently being conducted at near-incredible speed in an effort to find the victim. Boats and specialised equipment are suspected of being used in the operation.

Meanwhile, Deepak’s family members and other villagers around the riverbank are still anxiously awaiting word from the rescue team to come; meanwhile, Deepak’s village people and family members are nervously waiting out by the banks of the river, hoping for good news. There have been emotional events on the ground, relatives apparently fainting as they wait for the search to work.

The episode has once again reminded the country of crocodiles' habitat as an ongoing problem, and some of the same predators in river ways have been found within northern India as one of the major danger factors. Wildlife experts have repeatedly cautioned people away from water bodies full of crocodiles, particularly at rituals, bathing or fishing sites.

Crocodile attacks, relatively infrequent, can become deadly in a matter of moments, due to the reptile’s immense strength and its underwater ambush skills. If the nature of the creature is to be known on those waters, there should be warning signs as well as enhanced public awareness campaigns to prevent catastrophic events, experts say.

Local authorities may also be required to review measures to increase local safety around riverbanks that are commonly used for religious rituals and other public functions. Those who live in the area are also said to have asked for more stringent steps, such as warning displays and monitoring of crocodile-friendly areas near crocodile-prone zones.

As the search operation led by SDRF continues, the tragic event has left the entire village grieving for another disaster during a period of grief, and the family was also having.
