Vodafone Idea shares were also in high demand on Wednesday, and the stock shot up nearly 4.7 per cent during morning trading in Mumbai despite the stock market’s broad selloff. A week ago, Vodafone Idea, which operates under the Vi brand, introduced a new brand identity and a new face from Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan.
According to market reports, shares of Vodafone Idea rose as much as 4.69% to ₹14.72 on the NSE on the day. The stock's gains were also in line with the weakness among the broader stock market and the increasing geopolitical concerns as oil prices rose.
The immediate trigger for investor interest was Vi's major brand refresh announced on September 1. The company’s new logo, with its familiar yellow element, transformed into a 3-dimensional sphere above the letter “i,” was launched. The new image is now being promoted on consumer touchpoints, digital platforms, retail network, and communications.
Besides the new identity, Vodafone Idea also announced that Shah Rukh Khan will be the face of its upcoming brand campaign “Vi badal raha hai... tayaar rahiye”. The association with one of India’s most popular actors is a big marketing move for the telecom company to get its consumer on board and its image ready for the next phase.
Vodafone Idea has been working to strengthen its operational and financial position after a difficult decade. Network investments and expansion are expected to include the 4G infrastructure that is to be built and 5G services to be expanded on the network with Vodafone Idea.
Vodafone Idea had also been seeing positive subscriber numbers on the subscriber front. Business Standard reported that Vi added 240,114 new customers in July, its highest monthly gain in two years. The addition marked the telecom operator’s sixth month of growth as it tries to reverse customer losses in one quarter.
But financing is still key. With a capital expenditure programme of over ₹45,000 crore over three years for Vodafone Idea to be undertaken, the company is also looking to raise more than ₹45,000 crore. Of course, the company had raised ₹6,400 crore through bank-funded and non-funded facilities in the quarter ended June as part of its funding strategy. The cost of the investment is anticipated to be for network expansion and additional services to be rolled out.
The stock’s latest rally is happening in the context of expectations for Vi’s turnaround. Investors are watching subscriber growth, average revenue per user, network expansion, 5G rollouts, fundraising and the company’s ability to translate improved financial flexibility into sustainable operating performance.
The appointment of Shah Rukh Khan is mainly a branding development instead of a financial catalyst. Yet the new logo, a national marketing campaign and company operations have made the Vi brand more visible.
Vodafone Idea shares have also witnessed a remarkable recovery over a longer period. Kotak Neo said the stock rose around 42% over the six months as of September 2 and the shares reached an intraday high of ₹14.72 on September 2.
For investors, the latest surge highlights renewed market interest in Vodafone Idea, but the company's performance will have a great deal to do with how well it can execute its turnaround plan. Stronger subscriber growth and network investment are needed for the business to grow, and the very competitive Indian telecom market remains an issue.
With Shah Rukh Khan now leading its new campaign and a refreshed identity being rolled out across its network, Vi is attempting to signal a new chapter. How branding translates to better customer growth and financial performance in the months to come will be the bigger picture investors will be asking about.
