Heavy monsoon rains have disrupted the daily lives of much of Maharashtra and Delhi/NCR, and families and students have to keep an eye on whether schools and colleges will be closed tomorrow too. Some districts in Maharashtra have already declared precautionary holidays due to heavy monsoon rainfall and waterlogging, though there are no such orders in Delhi so far.
The latest school and college closures in both regions.
Maharashtra: Several districts shut schools, more decisions are on the way.
Heavy rainfall is affecting many parts of Maharashtra, particularly the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), and local governments have declared holidays for the educational districts.
In Palghar, District Collector Dr. Indu Rani Jakhar ordered the schools and colleges closed after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a Red Alert warning of extremely heavy rainfall. Similar precautionary holidays were announced in Panvel, Uran, and parts of Raigad where heavy rains and waterlogging have disrupted daily life.
However, the schools continued to operate in Mumbai city, Navi Mumbai, Thane, and Kalyan-Dombivli as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC), and Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) did not issue closure orders despite heavy showers and flooding in a number of low-lying areas.
No official announcement has been made on school or college closures for tomorrow. Local officials will make the decision based on the weather forecast and ground conditions later in the evening or early tomorrow morning.
Delhi: Schools and Colleges Will Remain Open.
In the national capital, heavy rainfall lashed several parts of Delhi-NCR on Tuesday, relieving humid weather but causing waterlogging and traffic disruptions in several areas.
The IMD issued Red and Orange Alerts for different parts of Delhi, warning of thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds. The weather department has also predicted more rain over the next few days.
Despite all the bad weather, the Delhi government has not announced any holiday for schools or colleges. The Directorate of Education (DoE) has not issued any notification of closure, so private schools and government, aided, and government schools will not be closed at this time of year.
Likewise, colleges and universities such as Delhi University, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), and Jamia Millia Islamia also need to continue their regular academic schedules unless there is a separate advisory.
How do school closures get made?
School holidays during the monsoon are generally declared by district administrations or municipal authorities based on the latest IMD forecasts, rainfall intensity, and local conditions. A decision is often made at short notice if heavy rainfall causes severe waterlogging or poses a risk to public safety.
In Maharashtra, district collectors and municipal corporations assess the situation independently of each other and issue closure orders. In Delhi, the Directorate of Education and the Delhi government make the final decision based on weather conditions and the IMD provides feedback to the Directorate to decide if there is a need for closure on a case-by-case basis.
What should parents and students do?
And since no statewide closure has been announced for tomorrow, students should assume that schools and colleges shall remain open unless informed otherwise.
Parents and students are advised to:
Check official announcements from their district administration or municipal corporation. Follow weather alerts from the IMD. Keep in touch with their schools and colleges for last-minute advisory. Travel safely when it is raining, waterlogging, or thunderstorms persist.
For now, schools and colleges in parts of Maharashtra are only closed where local authorities have issued orders, and the educational institutions in Delhi are expected to continue operating as usual unless new instructions are issued by the government.
