How the Accident Happened

The private sleeper bus was on its way from Delhi (Nangloi/Noida) to Kanpur (Rasulabad). The driver had pulled the bus over to the side of the expressway so that the passengers could take a washroom break, police officials said. As a few of the passengers stood close to the front and side of the parked vehicle, a speeding container truck came down from behind and ploughed into the bus. The impact was so severe that it crushed the passengers who had been standing on the road until finally the truck stopped.

Casualties and Identification

Six passengers died in the aftermath of the impact. The victims have been named as:

  • Sonu (32) – Resident of Auraiya
  • Devesh (32) – Resident of Basti
  • Aslam (27) – Resident of Kannauj
  • Santosh (45) – Resident of Prem Nagar, Delhi
  • Anurag (27) and Pramod (35).

Another three passengers were severely injured, one of whom, Shivkant Dubey (46), was reported to be in critical condition at a district hospital.

Administrative Response

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath immediately responded to the accident and expressed his condolences to the mourning families. He directed the district officials and the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) to make sure the injured received the best medical care possible and to quicken relief efforts. Mathura SSP Shlok Kumar and District Magistrate Chandraprakash Singh visited the hospital to observe the process. The DM has declared in accordance with government rule that the kin of the deceased and injured will receive ex-gratia compensation.

Investigation and Search for Driver

Preliminary investigations have found that the bus was parked on the main carriage-way, rather than part of the "Green Zone" or a lay-by this could have contributed to the tragedy. According to reports, the bus and container truck drivers fled to safety immediately after the collision. Both vehicles were seized and the police have put on a massive manhunt to catch them.

This is the second major incident on this section of the expressway in less than a month after a bus fire on January 22, prompting pressing questions about night-time patrolling and unauthorized stops on the high-speed highway.
