Amazon Prime Video is releasing Crime 101, which is based on Don Winslow’s novel. Directed by Bart Layton, it stars Chris Hemsworth, Halle Berry, and Mark Ruffalo. Combining the fun of jewel heists with psychological drama makes this one of the most eagerly awaited thriller movies of 2026.
Storyline
The movie is set in a city in which jewel theft runs rampant -- in Los Angeles, too. As a talented thief who is ambitious and elusive, Chris Hemsworth is in the perfect character (a good man’s player). Mark Ruffalo plays a determined detective whose objective is to find him and pursue him. Halle Berry plays an insurance broker who gets trapped in the chase and cannot get away that time to say everything. The narrative reads not unlike a cat-and-mouse game but like one in which both sides play in close proximity during all the tension, moral choices, and big moments.
To change the dynamic of those movie action-heavy heist scenes more closely than typical movies, Crime 101 is about one of its characters’ inner struggles in the same frame. The thief is one of the people who really deals with this as a criminal and this man will carry a private challenge. The detective is not just seeking justice he is wrestling with his own doubts too. This intricate story is the way the film is telling and not just a high-production thriller.
Partnership of Performers
Chris Hemsworth has long worked in heroic roles, but here we discover there's a dark side to him. His performance shows a man caught somewhere else, between ambition and conscience. Mark Ruffalo gives more depth to the detective role - realism comes into play - with the tale feeling really, really real. Halle Berry brings humanity to this as well as strength from the stage (as a woman). Together the three provide amazing work to keep the viewers engaged: And together do they make powerful performances so they all work in depth.
Direction and Style
Bart Layton is a masterful director, mixing realism with drama. Los Angeles is presented in its opulence and menace and yet also beauty and danger is depicted through Los Angeles (and even as in the movie itself) so the movie is not only a story of beauty and ferocity. The pacing is thoughtful, focusing on psychological tension, and not overbearing violence. This way Crime 101 is different from other heist thrillers.
Reception
Both audiences and critics rave about the film’s great actors and sophisticated performances. A lot of social media reviews say Hemsworth and Ruffalo have great chemistry so it’s harder watching Hemsworth’s popular action movies that seem more at odds. Still, it’s very thoughtful at times and holds true to Winslow’s theme.
Crime 101 isn’t just a heist movie you would look at in any other way. It is all about choices and ambition, and the hard feelings about life and morality that arise under pressure. With a strong cast and careful tone, it’s a new way to watch a crime drama. Streaming now on Amazon Prime Video, it’s a must-watch if you enjoy thrillers with psychological depth.
