Australia have made their first major change after their shock defeat to Bangladesh in the opening Test. Jake Weatherald has been dropped from the squad for the second Test and Matt Renshaw has been recalled to the Australian Test team.

The decision came just days after Bangladesh stunned Australia with a nine-wicket win in Darwin. That victory was a huge win for Bangladesh, but a poor performance for the Australian side with the bat.

Weatherald had a tough time in Darwin. The Australian opener made 23 runs in the first innings and was dismissed for a duck in the second innings. There was speculation as to whether he could make it to the Test side. His Test average has now fallen to 20.36 in six matches.

Renshaw now gets another chance at Test level. The 30-year-old last played a Test for Australia in February 2023 and has played shorter formats and domestic cricket the last few years. His fantastic domestic season has put him back into the squad.

Renshaw Gets Another Chance

Renshaw is rewarded for his great form in the Sheffield Shield for the recent season. He scored 499 runs in six games last season at an average of 49.90. That performance gave the selectors a very good reason to bring him back into the Test setup.

Renshaw made his Test debut in 2016 and has played 14 tests for Australia. He has one century and has an overall Test average of 29.31. He brings Australia an experienced option at the top of the order.

He is expected to contest the opening position alongside Travis Head. That could provide Australia with a different look at the top of the order when the second Test starts in Mackay on Saturday.

That change also comes at a time when Australia’s batting has been under pressure. The team was bowled out for just 198 in the first innings of the Darwin Test. Bangladesh did a good job of batting with 426 and Australia was under huge pressure.

Australia fought back with 284 in their second innings, but Bangladesh needed only 57 runs from their final innings to win the match. They reached the target with nine wickets in hand. It was a historic result and gave Bangladesh a 1 to 0 lead in the two-Test series.

Weatherald was not the only Australian batter who didn’t perform well in the match. Marnus Labuschagne also had a bad game and failed to make much progress as he achieved 31 and 1. But the selectors have decided to keep him in the squad for now. Australia coach Andrew McDonald has said Labuschagne needs to get bigger scores to secure his position at number three.

Australia needs a strong response in Mackay

The second test will be crucial for Australia to level the series. The game will take place in Mackay, Queensland, on Saturday.

The rest of Australia's 13-man squad remains unchanged. As a result, the selectors have decided to make just one change after such a heavy defeat in Darwin.

Renshaw is now equipped to make a strong return to Test cricket. He already played international cricket before and is now back with some good domestic form.

His challenge will be to maintain Australia’s stability at the top of the order. Bangladesh’s bowlers exposed the weaknesses of Australia’s batting in the first Test, so the home side will be wanting a much better start in Mackay.

Weatherald's dismissal shows how quickly things can go wrong in Test cricket. He had been given a long-term chance to play after making his Test debut during the 2025 and 2026 Ashes series and his recent performances were not enough to keep him in the team. Only one half-century in his first six Tests had not been enough for him.

Australia will hope that Renshaw can make the most of his return. A good performance from the experienced opener could give the selectors a hard decision for the games ahead.

For Bangladesh, the first test victory has given them a boost of confidence. Their bowlers were able to put Australia under pressure and their batters showed they could handle the Australian attack.

The second Test will also be more than just another match. Australia will be hoping to recover from a bad home defeat and Bangladesh will have the chance to complete a historic series comeback.

With Renshaw back and Weatherald out from Australia, Australia have already shown they are willing to make changes. Now is the big question if this new combination can help them bounce back and stop Bangladesh from creating another huge upset.
