The landmark match will take place at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, where the Melbourne Renegades will meet the Perth Scorchers, and will mark a landmark in the world expansion of Australia’s premier T20 competition.

The announcement was made jointly by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese at the Melbourne Cricket Ground as part of the larger ‘G'day Namaste’ initiative designed to strengthen sporting and cultural ties between India and Australia.

Historical moment for the Big Bash League

For the first time since the tournament started in 2011, BBL will be played outside Australian soil.

Cricket Australia believes that the move is indicative of the growing international popularity of the competition, especially in India, where Australian cricket has a large fan base.

Cricket Australia’s Executive General Manager of Big Bash Leagues, Alistair Dobson said he was confident that Chennai would set the stage for the historic occasion.

We know there are incredibly passionate cricket fans all over India, but particularly in Chennai. All we’ve spoken to has been really optimistic that we should expect a good crowd.

Dobson also said that while the Indian Premier League (IPL) remains the country’s biggest T20 tournament, the BBL has built an Indian fan base.

What has become clear to us as we've built this event out is just how popular the BBL already is in India. Obviously it’s nothing like the IPL, but the BBL is well-liked and respected. All fans will be there, I suspect, and there will be a fair bit of yellow in the crowd.

His reference to "yellow" is expected to allude to the passionate support for the Chennai Super Kings, whose fans dominate the stands whenever cricket is played at Chepauk.

Renegades to enjoy 'Home' Fixture in India

Even though the match will take place in Chennai, it will officially count as a home game for the Melbourne Renegades.

To make sure that the overseas trip doesn't affect their domestic campaign, both the Renegades and Perth Scorchers will have some extra time returning to Australia before their next BBL games.

The complete schedule for BBL 2026-27 season should be released next week.

What made the two teams to be chosen?

Many BBL franchises have expressed interest in participating in the historic fixture, Dobson said.

But logistical challenges, commercial considerations and the demanding nature of the BBL schedule meant that only certain teams could realistically be selected.

We looked across all our clubs and worked with them on what would need to be true for them to play in this game.

It was a mix of scheduling and commercial factors and everything in general. Integrating that game into a busy BBL schedule for those teams to be able to then travel back to the Australian market and then continue on a successful BBL campaign was crucial.

A New chapter for Australian Cricket

The decision to bring a BBL match to India was a step forward to the league’s global reach and the commercial relations of cricket in two of the world’s largest markets.

Chennai’s rich cricket tradition and city’s popularity in the cricket event are reasons why the historic event is expected to draw large numbers.

If successful, this initiative might also lead to more BBL matches to be played overseas in the future and Australian franchise cricket to a wider global audience.
