Former England Test coach Brendon McCullum has spoken out about the selection of Stephen Fleming as his successor for the national red-ball team. The former captain of both T20I and Test teams made his Test and T20I debut under Fleming for New Zealand before stepping down after a series defeat against the Black Caps. While he has quit as captain in the longer format, McCullum is still committed to English cricket as head coach of the limited-overs white-ball teams.
McCullum also praised the England and Wales Cricket Board for appointing a high-profile figure of Fleming’s caliber. He emphasized that attracting a coach who commands global options and convincing him to commit to the English setup is a massive achievement. Reflecting on his four-year tenure that started in 2022 (which was very memorable as a 3-0 whitewash against New Zealand), he expressed confidence in the team’s future direction. He praised Fleming as a great coach, noting that his former captain has the same style of thinking and executes it even better in a tactical sense. As a coach, he did it all so well, and with the Chennai Super Kings, he was a very successful coach, winning five titles in ten final games.
Ben Stokes, who has been a former England captain himself, has admitted to being the one to blame for McCullum stepping down from the Test captaincy, confessing that his sudden departure from international cricket mid-series was a catalyst for the coaching staff to change. Recalling how he casually broke the news to McCullum while the coach was making toast in the team kitchen, Stokes revealed how his resignation was what ultimately led to the management change.
Stokes has retired from all his international duties and is currently working for Durham while actively pursuing his coaching credentials, as he is working on some of his coaching badges with the ultimate dream of coaching the England national team. England now has Stephen Fleming as its chief and a new leadership team, but the echoes of the legendary Stokes-McCullum era still remain in the history of red-ball cricket in England.
