After a historic and triumphant campaign at the Commonwealth Games 2026, the Indian boxing team visited a famous Glasgow-based restaurant, Mister Singh's India, the Home of Curry, to celebrate their great achievement. The team had now won 10 medals in the sport alone, comprising seven gold and three silver. But a celebration quickly turned into an all-out war after Olympic medallist Lovlina Borgohain noticed a geographical mistake within the restaurant's branding.
The video went viral on social media, showing Lovlina holding a restaurant napkin and smiling at the management and staff. She said it with grace and firmness: the printed map of India on the napkin cut off the North Eastern part of the country. The physical map outside the restaurant also cut off the North Eastern states, she said. These exclusions hurt those from that part of the country emotionally, she said, and she asked the establishment to keep this in mind for the future and to respect their hospitality while bringing the important oversight to light.
The video was immediately criticized by social media users worldwide, who echoed Lovlina’s sentiment and called out the establishment for the cartographic error. Mister Singh’s India quickly issued an official public apology to address the controversy.
The owners told us that the restaurant has always been very proud of its Indian heritage and ancestry and has served customers from India and the world for nearly thirty-two years. Our restaurant is sorry for the map of India being incorrect and we will fix it. To the Indian delegation, we are thankful for the fact that we did not mean to cause any offense to them but we want to provide them with pride and honor for the Commonwealth Games.
The restaurant also promised the public that it would replace the logo with the complete map of India in the future. They described it as a humble privilege and honor to host Team India after their fantastic achievements and noted that the athletes and the guests made this an evening that the staff would remember for a long time. But after issuing this public apology, the restaurant’s official Instagram account was deleted, and the online community discussed the quick fallout of the viral event.
