Murali Sreeshankar has added another landmark accomplishment to his career when he won the silver medal in long jump for men at the Commonwealth Games 2026. Sreeshankar has already won a silver medal in the long jump at the mega multi-nation games as the first Indian man to win the event twice in the mega multi-nation games. On the other hand, this is also the fourth-ever medal for India in the long jump history of the Games after Suresh Babu won bronze in 1978, and Anju Bobby George became the first Indian woman to win a bronze medal in long jump at the 2002 Commonwealth Games.
Sreeshankar started his campaign off with a bang, the Indian star quickly established himself as a medal winner with an impressive distance of 8.03 meters on his first attempt. With good rhythm and skill he came back to 8.09 meters on his second jump to take over the lead in a fiercely-competitive field, and then in the last few rounds after two consecutive fouls he maintained his pace to 7.94 meters and 7.97 meters respectively.
The competition went into a frenzy in the fourth round when Jamaica's Tajay Gayle made a huge leap of 8.15m, winning the gold medal and taking Sreeshankar down to silver. Despite his strong run in the last two jumps, Sreeshankar was unable to beat Gayle. When the dust settled, Jamaica's Tajay Gayle took gold with his 8.15m jump, Murali Sreeshankar took silver for India with 8.09m and Scotland's Stephen Mackenzie got bronze for the home fans with a record distance of 8.08m.
Lokesh Sathyanathan also had an excellent performance in the final as he finished with Sreeshankar and India's record-setting performance. In his first Commonwealth Games he was just two places shy of a podium and ended up with fifth place overall. He had his best performance right from the get-go so far with 7.97 meters, and while he missed out on the 8-meter mark in his next jump he was still among the top five world-class athletes, which is a promising and good sign for his future work.
