Harry Kane has thrown his support behind head coach Thomas Tuchel after the manager's honest analysis of how the team performed after their 2-1 win over Norway in the quarter-final of the World Cup 2026 in the UK.
There was a buzz on the pitch when England made it into the last four after Jude Bellingham's brilliant brace, but Tuchel’s post-match comments that they were “lucky” to win were a point of contention, with Bellingham’s comment. But Kane feels that the German coach is trying to push the team to even higher standards ahead of the big semi-final against the defending champions Argentina on Wednesday, July 15 at Atlanta Stadium.
Kane Sees Tuchel’s Criticism as Motivation.
Kane said he thinks Tuchel knows the quality in England's squad better than anyone and wants his players to perform at their highest level.
"When he sees us train and sees the closeness and what we can do, especially with the players we have, the way we attack, our one-on-ones and skills… he just wants to see that version of us," said Kane.
The England captain said international football is seldom simple, especially when playing against elite opposition.
"He knows as much as anyone that it’s not as simple as that. We’re playing against good opposition and good teams. He’s trying to drag it out of us and we know ourselves we have another level that we can reach," Kane said.
Kane's comments suggest that there is full unity in the England camp despite different opinions on Tuchel's honest assessment.
What did Thomas Tuchel say?
Despite England progressing to the semi-finals, Tuchel admitted he was not fully satisfied with his team's whole performance against Norway.
The England boss thought that his side made the match unnecessarily difficult and they were lucky to win it, in his view.
"We found the way to get through to the last four which is certainly the most important thing to do. The analysing head of me still believes we have to play better. It’s not a problem, but no disconnect for me and my team," Tuchel said after the match.
In his words he said he wanted to see England dominate games more consistently as they target their first World Cup title since 1966.
Bellingham Responded Strongly
Unlike Kane, the match-winner Jude Bellingham seemed unimpressed by Tuchel's words.
The Real Madrid midfielder defended England's performance, pointing out the quality of the Norwegian side which included Erling Haaland, Martin Ødegaard, Antonio Nusa, and Alexander Sørloth.
"Maybe he doesn’t know what it’s like to play in those kind of conditions against Erling Haaland, Martin Ødegaard, Antonio Nusa, Alexander Sørloth. That's not an easy team to play against," Bellingham said.
His answer highlighted the differing views within the England camp, although there is no indication of any internal rift.
Eyes on Argentina
And now England will turn their attention to probably their most difficult task of the tournament—a FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-final against Argentina, the defending champions.
With Kane urging his teammates to find “another level” and Tuchel demanding better performances, England will aim to produce their best display yet as they aim to win the World Cup.
