A tragic incident has been reported from KRS in Srirangapatna taluk of Mandya district, where a 27-year-old woman died by suicide after jumping into the Cauvery River while telling her mother that she wanted to take a selfie.
The deceased has been identified as Kusumanjali, a resident of Ramakrishna Nagar in Mysuru.
According to initial reports, the woman had attempted to take her own life earlier that morning. Police intervened and rescued her before she could jump into the river.
Police had earlier rescued her
Reports suggest that Kusumanjali attempted suicide early in the morning near the Cauvery River. Police personnel who observed the situation managed to stop her from jumping into the water.
She was taken to the police station, where her mother Veena was informed about the incident.
The woman’s mother arrived at the police station to take her daughter home.
At this point, Kusumanjali asked her mother to visit the garden at KRS before leaving the area.
Her mother agreed to the request, but she would not know that there would be a tragic turn around soon after.
A woman jumped into the river in front of her mother.
While the mother and daughter were reportedly walking around the garden area, Kusumanjali said she wanted to take a selfie.
She allegedly approached the river, sat on the parapet wall, and told her mother she wanted to take a photograph.
According to the information, the woman then suddenly jumped into the Cauvery River in front of her mother.
Her mother witnessed the incident and was unable to prevent her from entering the water.
The event shook people in the vicinity, and efforts were made to find and retrieve the woman.
Body Recovered From Cauvery
The woman’s body was later recovered from the river.
After the recovery, the body was shifted to the K.R. Hospital mortuary in Mysuru for further procedures.
It has left the woman’s family devastated, especially since her mother had been with her moments before the tragedy.
Police are investigating the cause of the death.
Police Investigation Underway
The incident falls under the jurisdiction of KRS Police Station.
Police are also investigating the sequence of events, including the woman’s earlier suicide attempt, her rescue by police, her meeting with her mother, and the circumstances leading up to the fatal jump.
We still do not know the circumstances in which this incident happened.
The tragedy has also made the need to be much more vigilant around riverbanks more acute– especially at tourist destinations where people have the opportunity to approach water bodies for photographs and selfies.
