IND vs WI: Morkel Keen To See Prince, Mayank Rise To Challenge Without Bumrah

India will begin their 5-match T20I series in the West Indies on Tuesday night, October 6, and the focus will be on the bowling attack in the absence of pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah.

With Bumrah resting for the series, young fast bowlers Mayank Yadav and Prince Yadav will have a chance to take on much more responsibility and establish themselves as the next fast bowlers in the team.

In recent years, India has been winning T20 World Cups in such great numbers, and the 2024 and 2026 T20 World Cups are also the two biggest. India will host the next T20 World Cup in 2028, and cricket will also feature in the Los Angeles Olympics.

With that said, the team management is already looking for players who can help them in the long term. Bowling coach Morne Morkel thinks the current series also gives opportunities to young pacers.

Speaking to reporters in Lucknow on the eve of the opening T20I, Morkel said he was happy to see Mayank and Prince respond to the opportunity. Both pacers have made their mark in the Indian Premier League and have made a few appearances in the Indian Premier League, but they are still young and have yet to develop their international careers.

“They are both young and are still learning their trade,” Morkel said of the two fast bowlers. He also talked about the challenge of working with young players who frequently move between domestic cricket, the IPL, and international assignments.

Morkel said the coaching staff can keep in touch with the players when they are away from the national setup, but maintaining the same kind of individual interaction is difficult. He said that would be the goal for the team to improve that process in the future as young pacers develop their skills.

Morkel’s comments are a reflection of India’s wider drive to develop depth in bowling. Bumrah is still one of the key players in India’s T20 attack, so the absence of a senior player allows the younger bowlers to play under pressure and learn how to handle international-level expectations.

Mayank Yadav’s Pace And Increasing Skill Set

Mayank Yadav first made his name during the 2024 IPL season, and his fast pace was first noticed. His ability to generate high speeds made him one of the most talked-about young fast bowlers in the competition.

But injuries have interrupted his progress since then. Mayank has worked on his fitness and returned to international action in the T20Is against Zimbabwe earlier this year. He has also developed a slower delivery, which is another option against batters trying to attack his pace.

The slower ball was visible during IPL 2026, and there was a moment when he was able to fool Rohit Sharma. Such variations may be more significant as Mayank develops and learns how to adapt to match situations.

Now the West Indies series is indeed another important stage in his development. Mayank may have to take on a more prominent role in the attack without Bumrah and demonstrate how well he can translate his IPL performances into international cricket.

Prince Yadav Brings Swing And Variation

Prince Yadav has also established a reputation in the IPL for his ability to move the ball. His ability to swing deliveries both ways makes him a difficult prospect for batters, and his short-ball option provides an additional weapon.

He can also produce yorkers with skill, and he has the ability to work at all stages of a T20 innings. In IPL 2026, he dismissed Virat Kohli with a nip-backer, which showed good movement on an experienced batsman.

Prince has the West Indies series to prove that his performances in domestic and IPL can translate into consistent contributions for India. The difficulty might be to stay in control, adapt to international batters, and execute plans when under pressure.

The five-match series will also be important for Mayank and Prince. The young pacers, rather than just filling in for Bumrah, could develop themselves as serious options in India’s fast bowlers.

As Morkel and the Indian coaching staff will likely also be assessing how the two bowlers respond when they are given more responsibility. With a host of big tournaments on the horizon, developing reliable pace options alongside established stars will be a major part of India’s long-term plan.

As India prepares to face the West Indies, Mayank and Prince will be watched closely. Bumrah’s absence opens up the attack, but it also presents two young bowlers with a chance to develop in the international game with experience.
