India’s tour of Bangladesh has been hit with more uncertainty after the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) announced a three-match T20I series against India in September.
The Afghanistan series is scheduled to take place from September 13 to 17, and will be from September 13 onwards, according to ACB, meaning it could clash with the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s itinerary for India's white-ball tour.
The development has added another layer of uncertainty to a series that was already complicated due to strained relations between the cricket boards and wider political considerations.
The ACB has also finalised dates and venue for the three-match T20I series in Delhi. ACB president Naseeb Khan confirmed that the board has agreed on the schedule and the details have been communicated to the stakeholders.
This is significant because the proposed Afghanistan series overlaps with the latter part of the window that the Bangladesh Cricket Board had reserved for India’s tour.
According to the proposed BCB schedule, India and Bangladesh were expected to play three ODIs and three T20Is. The three-match ODI series was scheduled from September 1 to 6, followed by the T20Is from September 9 to 13.
The total window takes place from August 29 to September 15.
With the Afghanistan T20I series now scheduled from September 13 to 17, the two proposed itineraries cannot proceed in their current form if India is expected to participate in both series.
India’s Bangladesh Tour already Delayed
India’s tour of Bangladesh was scheduled earlier but postponed to 2026 because of political tensions between the two countries.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board has been working to revive the proposed series, and the country’s sports ministry has been involved in discussions to resolve the uncertainty, the Sports Ministry of Bangladesh had said.
The tour is of particular interest to Bangladesh as the country is looking to enhance the cricketing relationship with India and resume regular bilateral talks.
But the latest Afghanistan announcement means that the scheduling problem is no longer the only obstacle.
Bangladesh government working to end deadlock
Bangladesh's Sports Minister Aminul Haque recently stated that discussions on the India-Bangladesh cricket series are taking place at the ministerial level.
Haque expressed optimism that the deadlock could be resolved soon and said Bangladesh wanted to maintain strong relations with India through sports.
He also said that senior officials in both countries had had diplomatic talks in place.
The Bangladesh government has been trying to find a solution that would allow the proposed white-ball series to be possible and will also help normalise sporting relations between the two nations.
BCCI Awaiting Government Approval
BCCI, however, has been saying that the Bangladesh tour will require approval from the Indian government.
The Indian board is expected to make a final decision once it gets the approval from the Centre.
This means that the status of the Bangladesh tour depends on both diplomatic developments and the availability of a workable cricket schedule.
The Afghanistan series in Delhi now makes the scheduling process even more difficult.
Why does the Afghanistan series matter?
The Afghanistan T20I series is not just a replacement. It has been officially confirmed by the Afghanistan Cricket Board with Delhi as the venue and September 13 to 17 as the three games.
If India plays the Afghanistan series during those dates, the proposed Bangladesh itinerary will have to be modified unless the two boards agree to move the Bangladesh fixtures.
One of them could be for a change in Bangladesh schedule, but any change would have to take into account India’s bigger international calendar, player workload and venue availability.
For Bangladesh, the timing is especially important because the proposed series was already a matter of uncertainty.
Cricket and Diplomacy Intertwined
The India-Bangladesh cricket dispute has been more and more beyond the field.
The relations between the two cricket boards were strained due to conflicts between Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman and his IPL participation. Bangladesh later declined to send its team to India for the 2026 T20 World Cup and was replaced by Scotland.
The new developments do show both sides are at least trying to get past that dispute.
Bangladesh’s government has publicly expressed its willingness to resolve the problem, while the BCCI has said government clearance will be important before confirming the tour.
