India’s 2026 Commonwealth Games campaign was encouraged and the country’s first gold medal of multi-sport was awarded to ace weightlifter Mirabai Chanu, who won her third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal in 48kg and her country’s greatest athlete in her home country. Her amazing achievement was supported by her fellow countryman Rishikanta Singh Chanambam who was a perfect silver medalist in men’s 60kg.

Mirabai showed total dominance on the platform despite her early struggles and missed her first attempt in the snatch and clean and jerk. In a display of resilience, she lifted 85kg in the snatch to set a new Commonwealth and Games record. She then lifted 105kg in the clean and jerk to take her total winning lift to 190kg. She finished 22kg ahead of her next competitor from Nigeria, Ruth Asuquo Nyong, so Mirabai had no motivation to lift her final lift and had already won the top spot and set many records. She won her fourth overall Commonwealth Games medal for her to complete a glittering career that also includes an Olympic silver.
Earlier in the day, Rishikanta Singh was very strong in the men's 60kg category, showing his grit. The Manipuri weightlifter took the Commonwealth Games snatch record by 121kg and was in a good position. Although he struggled during clean and jerk where he was unable to get a couple of upper limit attempts, he successfully made it and he finished on the podium with a silver medal.
Another glorious chapter in Indian Weightlifting!
