Henry's Return and Guptill's Coaching Role: Latest NZ Cricket Updates

New Zealand cricket has suffered a major injury blow ahead of the remaining One-Day Internationals (ODIs) against India. Opening batter Devon Conway is out for the remainder of the five match series after suffering a concussion in training yesterday but there is some good news for Black Caps fans with fast bowler Matt Henry able to return from injury.

Meanwhile former New Zealand opener Martin Guptill has taken up coaching with the country’s women’s national cricket team and is back in international cricket set up again.

Devon Conway Ruled Out of India ODI Series

New Zealand Cricket announced on 6 November 2026 that Devon Conway would miss the rest of ODIs against India due to concussion.

The incident occurred during fielding practice at Eden Park in Auckland on November 3. Conway and teammate Matt Henry collided while trying to catch the same ball.

Both players were taken off and assessed for head injuries. Conway was taken to hospital where it was confirmed he had suffered a concussion.

The injury kept him out of the first ODI against India and after further assessment New Zealand Cricket decided not to play him in the rest of the series.

Conway is an experienced batsman who can provide stability at the top of New Zealand’s batting order.

Matt Henry Cleared to Return to Action

There is some good news for the Black Caps though as Matt Henry has been cleared of concussion after the training ground collision.

The fast bowler was also assessed after the incident. Unlike Conway he didn’t have a concussion and could play again.

Henry’s return will help New Zealand’s bowling attack as it tries to recover from its opening ODI defeat against India.

His experience in international cricket and ability to create movement with the new ball makes him an important cog in New Zealand’s set up.

The team will hope Henry can make an impact in the remaining matches.

Nick Kelly Called Up as Conway's Replacement

With Conway out, New Zealand Cricket have called up left-handed batter Nick Kelly into the squad.

Kelly was picked for the fourth and fifth ODIs originally but has been called up earlier to replace Conway.

He will join the team in Wellington for the second ODI on November 7.

His inclusion gives New Zealand another batting option as the team prepares for the remaining matches against India.

Martin Guptill Returns to New Zealand Cricket as Coach

In another big development former New Zealand international Martin Guptill has returned to the country’s cricket set-up as a coach.

New Zealand Cricket announced on 7 October that Guptill would be part of the White Ferns' coaching support group for their T20I series against Australia.

Guptill will give batting and fielding support to the women’s team. He has been drafted into the coaching staff while regular assistant coach Craig McMillan is recovering from back surgery.

New Zealand international Andre Adams has also joined the support staff alongside interim head coach Dean Brownlie.

Guptill played 367 times for the Black Caps and is regarded as one of New Zealand’s finest white-ball batters. He will help the younger players in the women’s squad with his international experience.

New Zealand Look to Bounce Back Against India

With Conway out and Henry fit to play, New Zealand will need to strengthen its combination for the rest of the ODI series.

India won the rain-affected opening ODI in Auckland by five wickets on November 4 to go 1-0 up in the series.

The second ODI is on November 7 in Wellington. New Zealand will be looking to even the series but India will want to extend its lead.

The latest news is mixed for New Zealand: Conway is a loss but Henry is available; Guptill’s appointment as coach brings international experience to the country’s women’s cricket programme too.
