Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) has been acquired by the Aditya Birla Group of the Indian Premier League, creating new buzz in Indian cricket. A league of the world, the move can also cause great fanfare and to players’ expectations in the national media and to the likes of the mainstream international media, on a big scale is also going on here.
Although much speculation has been done, an important leader of the Aditya Birla Group, Ananya Birla, assures fans that the heritage team’s name will not change. This assurance goes as a big relief to our loyal RCB fans whose friendship has created such a close emotional connection to the brand.
RCB is more than a cricket team- it’s an identity and legacy. We respect that deeply and there’s nothing going to change with regards to the name,” Ananya Birla claimed. Her comments also suggest how the company would also look to protect its heritage but come up with a new vision- and also new management strategies for its future at the same time as keeping its franchise together.
With its heavy line-ups and fan base, RCB is one of the most noted teams of IPL till now even if they failed to win a single title. It is now likely with the buy-out and/or sale by a powerful business (Aditya Birla Group) that the franchise will be the most focused and profitable one now.
There are some experts who think this move would shape the team, corporate partnerships with its owners and thus team results to a large degree in all aspects of its operation, brand partnerships and long-term performance. With solid corporate support RCB would have the resources to build a stronger team and local grassroots cricket and build great engagement with fans at the deep end both from India and around the world.
Notional financial info about the deal hasn't been disclosed but the move is evidence that big companies are investing more in sports franchises, the kind they value to be a global entertainment brand.
For fans, in fact, the biggest takeaway is clear RCB is still going to roar just as it did in its glory days, under the right circumstances and ownership (and new ambitions!) to this day.
