While RCB celebrated a large victory over CSK at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on Sunday 5 April 2026, RCB's victory over Chennai Super Kings CSK and the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) for the first time in the history of the match at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium has been spoiled by some unsavory fan behaviour in the past few days.
It is the first time that RCB fans in the vicinity of a CSK supporter who has been heckling a CSK fan in front of the team and harassing a young female CSK fan in the stands has been reported as a video in the stands while they were seen in the crowd at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium has been widely condemned by social media.
The Incident: Banter Turns Into Harassment
The high-stakes “Southern Derby” has attracted a great deal of attention, but the line was crossed just after RCB won, witnesses say. The footage and social media accounts show the young woman, who was wearing a yellow CSK jersey, surrounded by a group of male fans. What began with vocal “taunting” at Chennai’s defeat turned into a more real fight.
The video shows the group leaning into the woman’s personal space and shouting slogans directly at her. And the victim said she was physically intimidated and manhandled in the scuffle. The girl is clearly distressed and after a while stands up and yells at the group, demanding they back off and questioning their “disgusting” behavior.
Social Media Backlash
The footage has triggered a heated debate on X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram on the toxicity of modern sports fandom. Even though RCB fans have distanced themselves from the group in the video saying “true fans do not behave this way” the incident has brought to light an issue of safety for female fans in crowded stadiums.
- Public Sentiment: “Winning a match doesn’t give you a license to touch or harass someone. This is not rivalry; it’s hooliganism,” wrote one user.
- Police Intervention: Reports say that police personnel at the stadium eventually had to intervene to escort the woman to safety and disperse the aggressive crowd.
A Pattern of Aggressive Fandom?
This is not the first time such an incident has occurred during an RCB-CSK fixture. Earlier in the week, other female fans had taken to social media to report being catcalled and hooted at just for wearing rival colors outside the stadium. More gravely, a sexual harassment complaint was also filed by the daughter of a senior official at the Cubbon Park Police Station in the premium seating sections.
Sports commentators and former cricketers now are calling for stronger "Fan Codes of Conduct" and better surveillance of the stands in order that the spirit of the game doesn't get lost in such “appalling” behavior.
