Roger Federer has weighed in on one of all-time biggest men’s tennis debates and he’s a different choice between Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev. The three stars are doing well in 2026, but their seasons were very different in terms of injuries, form and big tournaments.
Federer, a 20-time Grand Slam champion, was asked to decide who is the strongest of the three players based on what they have produced. While he acknowledged Alcaraz and Zverev have their merits, Federer ultimately favoured Sinner because of the Italian's remarkable run at the Masters 1000 events earlier in the season.
Sinner enjoyed a fantastic start to 2026 winning five consecutive Masters 1000 tournaments. His wins in Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo, Madrid and Rome all showed his consistency and dominance against the top players on the ATP Tour. He won the Wimbledon title before a shoulder injury interrupted his season.
According to Federer, Sinner's performances prior to the injury setback made him stand out from all his rivals. Sinner's level of play during that time period was such a big difference to the Swiss legend, the Swiss legend said, and Federer cited the Italian's performance at the Masters tournaments as one of the reasons why he picked him.
The former world No. 1 acknowledged that the current situation could make the debate more complicated. Sinner's injury interrupted his momentum while Alcaraz also had fitness problems in the thick of the season.
Alcaraz missed a lot of the clay-court swing due to a wrist injury and subsequently missed the entire grass-court season. His return came at the US Open where he did qualify for the quarter-finals. The interruption meant that the Spaniard didn’t have time to build the same level of momentum in the middle of the season.
Zverev was able to take advantage of the absence and fitness struggles that his rivals faced. The German had the best season of his career in 2026 and won two Grand Slam titles at the French Open and Wimbledon. Those accomplishments solidified his case as the leading player of the season.
If the three players were to meet now, Federer admitted that Zverev might have an advantage because of the different fitness levels of Sinner and Alcaraz. But when looking at the season in general, Federer still favoured Sinner.
The Swiss great also made it clear that Alcaraz cannot be discounted when he is playing at his highest level. Federer argued that a fully fit Alcaraz has a strong argument for being considered the best player on the circuit because of the level he can reach when everything is working in his favour.
That distinction makes the Sinner-Alcaraz debate particularly interesting. Sinner's case is based on his amazing consistency and total dominance in the first part of the season and Alcaraz's on his ability to produce an extraordinary level of tennis when he is fit. Zverev, on the other hand, has strengthened his position with his two Grand Slam wins.
So Federer's comments do not settle the debate between the three players. Rather, they show how different factors affect who is the best player in the world. For Federer, Sinner’s run of Masters 1000 wins and his performances before his injury were enough to lead the entire season-long discussion.
With the 2026 season in sight, Sinner, Alcaraz and Zverev’s performances will continue to shape the discussion on the next generation of men’s tennis. Their diverging paths have also ensured the battle for supremacy has been one of the sport’s greatest stories.
