IPL 2027: Will Rohit Sharma Replace Hardik Pandya as Mumbai Indians Captain?

Rohit Sharma could return as captain of the Mumbai Indians for IPL 2027. Rumours about a leadership change have been doing the rounds after reports that MI may bring back its most successful captain after a disappointing campaign under Hardik Pandya.

However Mumbai Indians haven’t announced any captaincy change yet. It is just a reported possibility rather than a confirmed decision.

Report Suggests Rohit Could Lead Mumbai Indians Again

On 31st October 2026, The Indian Express reported that Mumbai Indians may hand back the captaincy to Rohit Sharma for IPL 2027.

The report said discussions have been held in the franchise about its leadership plans. Rohit who led Mumbai Indians to five IPL titles could be back as team leader again.

The report also said that Rohit had initially mentioned Tilak Varma as a possible option but he agreed to take responsibility if the franchise wanted him back.

Rohit Sharma nor Mumbai Indians have yet confirmed the development.

Mumbai Indians' Difficult IPL 2026 Campaign

The speculation comes after a disappointing IPL 2026 season for Mumbai Indians. Pandya led them to a ninth-place finish (14 league matches lost) under him. They lost 10 of their 14 league games.

The franchise has also been waiting for another IPL trophy since its last title win in 2020. The disappointing campaign has led to talk about whether Mumbai Indians need changes in leadership and team strategy.

Rohit’s experience and success with the franchise could make him an option as they prepare for next season.

Rohit's Successful Record as Mumbai Indians Captain

Rohit Sharma is still one of the most successful captains in IPL history. Under his captaincy Mumbai Indians won five IPL titles and became one of the strongest teams in the competition.

His ability to manage experienced internationals as well as young Indian talent was part of the success of the franchise.

Rohit had stepped down as captain before the 2024 season but continued playing for Mumbai Indians. His return to leadership could therefore be a big thing for the franchise and its fans.

What About India's Captaincy?

One needs to separate Mumbai Indians speculation from India’s international captaincy.

Rohit Sharma is no longer India’s ODI captain. Shubman Gill leads the Indian ODI team now while Rohit is still playing as a batter.

There has been no official announcement that Rohit will return as India’s national captain but the latest reports seem to be about Mumbai Indians changing their captain for IPL 2027.

Official Confirmation Still Awaited

For now, Rohit Sharma’s return as Mumbai Indians captain is a rumour. The franchise has not issued any statement confirming the reported plan yet.

If those reports are true then IPL 2027 could see Rohit back in the leadership role he had previously with great success. Until Mumbai Indians make an announcement fans should not take this as a done deal, speculation only.
