Indian cricket has produced several generations of iconic players but few transitions captured the emotions of fans quite like the journey from Sachin Tendulkar to Dhoni.
Sachin's wicket for one generation of Indian cricket fans may have seemed to be the end of India’s hopes. Years later, Dhoni has almost created the opposite feeling. And when he was still at the crease, fans would often feel that India could somehow complete the chase.
The popular description of this change is simple: “Sachin is out, turn off the TV” to “Dhoni is still there, he will take care of it.”
When Sachin's Wicket Felt Like the End
Sachin Tendulkar was the figure in Indian cricket in the 1990s and early 2000s. His innings were followed intensely, and his dismissal could change the mood of an entire household.
The idea of fans switching off their televisions after Sachin's dismissal became Indian cricket folklore.
Interestingly, Dhoni himself did recall this feeling in an interview in 2009. In a discussion about his childhood, he said that his interest in cricket began and ended with watching Tendulkar bat and that he would turn off the television when Sachin got out.
The comment is quite interesting for two different eras of Indian cricket.
Then Came MS Dhoni
As Dhoni came to the Indian team in his prime, he developed a very different relationship with the supporters.
Dhoni is well known for ending games in limited overs cricket. His calm attitude to pressure and ability to get boundaries late in the innings made the fans believe.
Instead of thinking the match was over when India's biggest star was dismissed, supporters felt that the game could remain alive as long as Dhoni was still batting.
‘Dhoni Is Still There’
The phrase “Dhoni is still there” eventually became a symbol of the confidence many fans placed in the former India captain.
In 2020, a social media post summarising Dhoni's career described the change from switching off the television after Sachin's dismissal to keeping it on because Dhoni was still at the crease. The post was subsequently picked up by cricket-focused websites and became another example of how fans viewed Dhoni's career.
The sentiment was bigger than one single player’s statistics. It represented a change of the emotional relationship between Indian cricket supporters and their heroes.
From One Hero to Another
The transition did not happen overnight.
Sachin remained one of India’s most important players even after Dhoni emerged. At the same time, Dhoni gradually established his own identity through his performances as a wicketkeeper-batter and captain.
His reputation for a finisher grew through some of the more memorable run chases and his leadership during India’s big tournament wins consolidated his connection with fans.
Sachin for many supporters was the idea that one great batting performance can change a match. Dhoni was the belief that in the end it was not over until the last ball.
Two Legends, Different Kinds of Hope.
Sachin vs. Dhoni is not a comparison of Sachin vs Dhoni.
They were different periods and different roles in Indian cricket. Tendulkar became synonymous with elite batting and Dhoni became synonymous with finishing, leadership and composure under pressure.
The so-called fan transition, however, tells a bigger story about Indian cricket: as an older generation grew up the new generation came to know a new player to trust in difficult times.
