Suruchi Singh and Kamaljeet were the most successful Indian shooters at the 2026 Asian Games and won the gold medal in the 10m air pistol mixed team event, becoming the second gold of the competition. The Indian team achieved a 484.6 points final to defeat South Korea, who scored 478.0 points to win silver.
Iran won the bronze medal with 415.8 points while Indonesia scored 349.4 points and were eliminated in the final. Suruchi and Kamaljeet also set an Asian record with 484.6 points in the final, surpassing the previous record held by Uzbekistan at the Asian Shooting Championships in New Delhi.
Suruchi Singh And Kamaljeet Dominate 10m Air Pistol Final
The Indian duo made an excellent start to the final, registering 103 points in the first series. They came out on top at the beginning and South Korea followed with 98.1 points. Iran followed with 98.0 and Indonesia with 95.2.
The second series continued with India winning again. Suruchi and Kamaljeet also contributed 99.4 points to reach 202.4. South Korea followed with 103.1 points to close the gap and reach 201.2 points.
The Indian pair maintained their momentum in the third series with 101.1 points to reach 303.5. South Korea scored 99 points and ended the stage on 300.2, Iran on 295.0 and Indonesia on 291.0.
With the performance, India entered the next stage in front and in the race for the gold medal.
India Holds Nerve In Final Stage
Suruchi and Kamaljeet continued their strong run in Stage 2. They scored 61.2 points in the opening series of the stage, taking their overall score to 364.7 and extending their lead over South Korea to 5.8 points.
Indonesia was eliminated after 349.4 points.
The Indian shooters then extended their advantage. Suruchi and Kamaljeet reached 424.9 points in the second series of Stage 2 while South Korea placed 416.5. Iran placed 415.8 and won the bronze medal.
South Korea fought late in the final series, but the Indian pair held their composure to finish on 484.6 points. They finished the competition 6.6 points ahead of the South Korean pair.
The Indian score was also only four points short of the world record, highlighting the quality of their performance in the final.
India wins second gold at Asian Games 2026
The gold medal is India’s second in the 2026 Asian Games. Earlier in the competition, the Indian women’s cricket team won gold after defeating Sri Lanka by 147 runs in the final.
India's total medal tally is 19, with two gold medals, eight silver medals, and nine bronze medals.
Shooting has once again emerged as one of India's main medal-producing disciplines at the Games. In addition to Suruchi and Kamaljeet's gold, APS Tomar, Rudrankksh Patil, and Niraj Kumar won silver in the men's 50m rifle 3 positions team event.
Tomar and Niraj will also be in the individual final and therefore India will have another chance of adding to its shooting medal count.
India gets medals in a number of sports
India has enjoyed medal-winning performances at the Asian Games so far in different disciplines. In table tennis, Diya Chitale and Manush Shah beat Hong Kong's Wong Chun Ting and Doo Hoi Kem in the mixed doubles quarterfinals to secure India a medal.
In squash, Joshana Chinappa and Velavan Senthilkumar also secured a medal after defeating the Philippines' David Pelino and Jemcya Aribado in the mixed doubles quarterfinals.
Swimming also saw Indian athletes advance to the next stage. Sajan Prakash qualified for the men's 200m butterfly final after finishing third in his heat, while Rishabh Das and Utkarsh Patil entered the men's 200m backstroke final.
Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto were able to move forward in mixed doubles after defeating Maldives' Aminath Abdul Razzaq and Nibal Ahmed.
Suruchi and Kamaljeet had earlier won the qualification round of the 10m air pistol mixed team event and produced a gold medal performance in the final.
Mixed results for India in other events
India also had mixed results in other disciplines. Prohit Baroi and Prasanna Kumar advanced to Final B in the men's kayak double 500m, while India's women's kayak four finished eighth.
In fencing, India's men's and women's teams were eliminated in the round of 16. Megha Pradeep and Neha Leichonbam also exited the women's canoe double 500m event.
Table tennis saw Harmeet Desai and Yashaswini Ghorpade lose their quarterfinal while the Indian swimmers Dhanush Suresh, Aneesh Sunil, and Dhakshan Shashikumar were unable to get to the finals.
In athletics, Anamika Aneesh and Pooja placed seventh and ninth respectively in the women's heptathlon.
But Suruchi Singh and Kamaljeet had that day for themselves. Their Asian record performance in the 10m air pistol mixed team event brought India its second gold medal at Asian Games 2026 and added another significant chapter to India's shooting campaign.
