Mercedes-Benz has expanded the range of performance SUVs in India with the launch of the Mercedes-AMG G 63 Offroad Pro at an ex-showroom price of Rs 3.80 crore. A more off-road version of the classic G-Wagon, it has more hardware and technology to support off-road performance.
Mercedes-AMG G 63 Offroad Pro will be sold only in limited numbers; therefore, it is a very special edition to the G-Class family. Compared to the standard Mercedes-AMG G 63, the new Offroad Pro is priced at Rs 6 lakh. For that price, the SUV gets a number of upgrades to its off-road performance and aesthetics.
Mercedes-AMG G 63 Offroad Pro: Off-road hardware
One of the major upgrades to the AMG G 63 Offroad Pro is in suspension technology. The SUV has active ride control suspension and roll stabilisation for active roll and active roll control suspension. It is designed to give the vehicle more control and stability on rough and demanding roads and handling surfaces.
The SUV also has active balance control, allowing the driver to adjust roll stiffness in three different stages. This allows the driver to adjust the vehicle’s behaviour according to the terrain and driving conditions.
Another key aspect is the Traction Pro mode. The system can be used for wheel traction control in Rock and Sand driving modes. Mercedes says it can independently control braking torque at individual wheels, and seven stages of locking are provided. This is especially useful in tackling loose surfaces, rocks, and other challenging off-road scenarios.
The Mercedes-AMG G 63 Offroad Pro’s exterior also gets some high-tech elements to keep it rugged. Plus, it gets a roof rack with aluminium panels and a ladder on the rear that can be fitted to the rear. The SUV’s 20-inch AMG alloy wheels have been designed with a matte black finish for the G 63, making it all the more purposeful.
Mercedes-AMG G 63 Offroad Pro features
Inside the cabin, the G 63 Offroad Pro retains the premium technology expected from a Mercedes-AMG model. It has a 12.3-inch digital driver's display and a 12.3-inch central touchscreen, both powered by Mercedes' MBUX NTG7 infotainment software.
Connectivity features include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and USB-C ports are also available in the cabin. Buyers get an augmented reality navigation system, which can give them a visual guide to navigate roads and unfamiliar places.
The SUV’s displays can also provide a variety of information useful for off-road driving. Depending on the settings, the driver can monitor vehicle position, compass direction, altitude, steering angle, tyre pressure, and temperature. If necessary, differential locks information can also be shown to the driver, so that they can better understand the situation on hard terrain.
The transparent bonnet function is probably one of the most significant technology features. The camera technology is used to see the area below the front part of the SUV, helping the driver see what is underneath the vehicle with regard to obstacles or uneven terrain where visibility is lacking.
The luxury equipment list also includes ambient lighting and an 18-speaker, 760W Burmester 3D surround-sound system. Safety features include Active Brake Assist, lane-keeping assistance, and a 360-degree camera for enhanced control and safety.
Mercedes-AMG G 63 Offroad Pro Engine And Performance
The powertrain is unchanged compared to the standard Mercedes-AMG G 63. The Offroad Pro is powered by a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 petrol engine that produces 585hp and 850Nm of peak torque.
The engine is coupled with a 22hp 48V mild-hybrid system, which adds electrification to the high-performance SUV's powertrain. All-wheel drive is standard and particularly useful, given the Offroad Pro's emphasis on challenging terrain.
Despite its large dimensions and heavy weight, the AMG G 63 Offroad Pro is still a strong straight-line performer. Mercedes states that the SUV can go from 0 to 100kph in 4.4 seconds.
With a V8 engine, all-wheel drive, suspension with different configurations, and some off-road equipment, the Mercedes-AMG G 63 Offroad Pro is a more adventure-oriented version of the performance G-Class. In addition to its limited availability and Rs 3.80 crore ex-showroom price, it is also positioned in the ultra-luxury SUV segment in India.
