Samsung is due to unveil its next generation premium foldable smartphone, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, next month at its Galaxy Unpacked event on July 22.
While Samsung has yet to officially announce the specifications of the phone, a series of recent leaks indicate that Samsung is working on one of its biggest foldable upgrades yet in this new generation of premium foldable phones, with a nearly crease-free screen.
Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor, and upgraded artificial intelligence capabilities.
The most prominent improvement is the redesigned foldable display.
Tips from tipsters indicate that the crease running through the middle of the screen is much lighter now and the inner display looks smoother than the original Galaxy Fold displays. Samsung is going with a redesigned hinge for the Galaxy Fold that spreads pressure around the screen to minimize the crease and make it more durable.
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is expected to also have a bigger AMOLED display with a high refresh rate and therefore a smooth scrolling screen with a better refresh rate and a better gaming experience and a more immersive multimedia experience. The outer cover screen will also have thinner bezels, allowing users to have a more conventional smartphone feel when folded.
The performance will be backed up by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset which will provide faster processing speeds, better graphics performance, and better energy efficiency.
Moreover, coupled with a lot of RAM and storage, the phone will be able to run multitasking, gaming, video editing, and AI-powered apps very easily.
Artificial intelligence will continue to be one of Samsung’s key areas of interest. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra should likely be upgraded with Galaxy AI features such as live translation, document summarization, AI-assisted writing, photo editing, and smarter multitasking for the foldable form factor.
Camera improvements are also expected. Samsung has not released specifications but industry reports suggest that the Fold 8 Ultra will have better image sensors, better low-light photography, better zoom, and AI-based image processing.
These upgrades could help Samsung in the premium smartphone camera segment.
Battery life is another area Samsung may introduce refinements. An efficiency boost from the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor can mean that users can expect longer battery life even if power consumption stays close to the previous generation. Fast wired and wireless charging is also expected.
Design-wise, leaks indicate that Samsung has continued to refine the Fold series with a thinner and lighter profile. The device will be made of premium materials, including an Armor Aluminum frame and strengthened glass protection, while still being portable and durable.
Samsung's July 22 Galaxy Unpacked event is also expected to introduce other products like the next generation of Galaxy smartwatches and additional AI-powered ecosystem devices.
Although these specifications are largely based on leaks and unofficial reports, Samsung's most polished foldable smartphone until now will be the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra.
If the crease-free display, flagship Snapdragon chipset, and AI enhancements come true, the device could further strengthen Samsung's position in the premium foldable smartphone market.
