That high-profile actor Prakash Raj appears to be embroiled in a controversy over his words concerning the epic Ramayana again. Besides his work, he was the source of condemnation from almost all points of view; his remarks at a public event even turned into a criminal complaint against him.
In its most literal form, on the spoken level, Prakash Raj took the Ramayana tale that has offended many critics and put an alternative spin on it--in the spirit of satire. Rama, he said, hailed from North India; Ravana was a tribal figure of South India, reports say.
And then midway through that, he recounted the story of two men battling over the fruits of a garden, sharing a version that was way different from the classical one of that epic. Rama arrived in South India with Lakshmana and Sita and noticed that Lakshmana was hungry. He explained and suggested that they eat fruit obtained from an orchard near them. In Raj’s telling, they ate the fruits, and Shurpanakha informed Ravana of it.

Ravana had been kind in the beginning, granting them the right to eat, he said; then he later extended a request for payment, and there was a controversy. It provided another mechanism to articulate socio-political contexts (for instance, the imposition of language) in contemporary culture as a narrative. He reacted adversely to efforts to promote Hindi in non-Hindi-speaking regions of the country.
That is not a form of speech that should benefit language diversity. His remarks played up the fury of these members, as well as referring to regional identity and the practice of cultural diversity as part of daily life. Those words have been widely condemned among certain sections of the people and the citizens alike. The actor is said to be distorting religious texts and causing feelings of harm.
There’s been chaos on social media, some defenders claiming that what the man said is what he feels now, and others saying this is coming back to haunt him down the line. He has been the target of controversy more than once, and recently, Prakash Raj received a lot of flak.
Recently, he has been a highly vocal dissenter and critic on political issues, cultural debate, and freedom of speech. So, as one of the lessons once again of the nature of the free-speech versus reverence-for-religious-belief debate in a country like India with its varied faith strands is that these two cannot possibly coexist.
While artists or public figures use satire, for sure it provokes thought, but by the same token also provokes response and response to actions that erode established practices, and that is against cultural and/or religious tradition and it then becomes a way that creates backlash when it contradicts inherent socialised beliefs.
