A new chapter of the divorce case between Tamil megastar and politician Thalapathy Vijay and wife Sangeetha Sornalingam. Sangeetha's petition was heard in the Chengalpattu District Court and the petitioner requested the court to give the woman a right to remain in the matrimonial home. The appeal is made in the context of pending divorce proceedings that have already garnered widespread public attention.
Sangeetha sought an interim order that would enable her to reside at the couple’s home in Neelankarai, Chennai (ECR) until the divorce case is decided, in her plea. In addition, Vijay said that if she went to the court, he would not allow her to stay in the home. She added that she had no proper residence and thus required legal protection to be considered in her matrimonial home.
The couple have been married for 28 years, but the relationship took a turn for the worse recently. Earlier this year, Sangeetha filed for divorce and accused Vijay of having an extramarital affair with a leading actress. The divorce petition is for the termination of their marriage, and the matter grew to be one of Tamil Nadu’s hottest legal cases, in light of Vijay’s double role as a cinema icon and political figure.
A preliminary hearing involving Sangeetha has been held with the Chengalpattu District Court accepting the petition and setting the next hearing as 20 April 2026. Until then, the court will take into account her request for residential rights. Lawyers observe that petitions of this sort occur frequently in divorce cases, where the right to residence is frequently challenged when high‑profile couples separate.
The case has taken on a kind of public and fan attention. Vijay’s supporters took a dismissive stance; the people in the opposition had sympathies with the stand.
