The Great Pongal Clash: Prabhas’ 'The Raja Saab' vs Thalapathy Vijay’s 'Jana Nayagan'

It is the time for a head-on release for two of South India's biggest superstars as the Indian film industry gears up for one of the biggest box office clashes in recent times; Thalapathy Vijay and Prabhas are set for an in-person contest on January 9, 2026. As Pongal and Sankranti approach their festival season, Jana Nayagan’s showdown with The Raja Saab has divided fans, sparking intense trade speculation.

Jana Nayagan: A Farewell for the Masses

Jana Nayagan, for Thalapathy Vijay, is not just another movie; Jana Nayagan is an emotional milestone. Promoted on TV as his last film before he focuses on his political role in Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), the hype around this project is unmatched. H. Vinoth directs the high-octane political drama. It’s an "out-and-out Thalapathy film," perhaps even according to rumors that it’s a remake of the Telugu hit Bhagavanth Kesari, but Vinoth has also promised to make it an expression of the actor’s legacy.

The film's cast includes Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, and Mamitha Baiju. Music by Anirudh Ravichander. Viral song "Thalapathy Kacheri" Huge ticket demand in Karnataka and Kerala with prices in Bengaluru reaching ₹2000 per seat.

The Raja Saab: The More Experimental Prabhas

On the other side of the ring is Prabhas, who starred in The Raja Saab, a film that is a huge contrast from action-heavy movies such as Salaar and Kalki 2898 AD. Directed by Maruthi, the horror-comedy explores the comparatively lighter, business-friendly aspects of the “Rebel Star.” 

Plot & Visuals:

Prabhas plays a royal descendant who goes inside an ancestral mansion to retrieve their lost wealth. In The Raja Saab, Sanjay Dutt, Boman Irani, and Malavika Mohanan are part of an ensemble cast. Spanning over 3 hours and 10 minutes, the movie heavily relies on VFX and comedic timing. 

Box office battle:

The numbers So far, the competition is neck-and-neck. The latest trade reports tell a very different story of which regions have their own favorite. Should The Raja Saab fulfill its horror-comedy promise, it could win over a family audience. If Jana Nayagan has succeeded in quenching the "Thalapathy" craze, it can perhaps set a new all-time record for a Tamil film.
