A big fire broke out in a Kia car showroom at Saidulajab area of South Delhi on Friday, November 6, and a rescue operation was launched after several people got trapped inside the building. Black smoke filled the sky as flames engulfed the showroom, and people had to find their way out through adjoining buildings.
Video of the incident shows people crawling on their hands and knees across a narrow ladder or connecting structure between two buildings in order to get to safety. There was a large gap between the buildings and heavy smoke around the showroom so evacuation was difficult.
About 15 people were rescued from the building. Several people were evacuated from upper floors and the rooftop area; others were evacuated through the rear side with help of emergency personnel and residents.
The incident took place at a Kia showroom near Saket Metro Station on MG Road. Delhi Fire Services personnel, police, ambulance teams and disaster response officials reached the spot after information about the blaze was received around 3:45 pm.
Dramatic Rescue as People Crawl Across Ladder Between Buildings
Rescue became even more difficult because people were trapped on upper floors while thick smoke continued to spread.
Photos from the scene showed rescuers and members of the public using ladders against adjoining buildings to help people out. Some crawled across the narrow connecting structure to get into the neighbouring building.
Local people also helped rescue those trapped; emergency personnel took them to safety. Police and firefighters coordinated the evacuation but allowed people to move away from the fire.
Some people were stuck near a staircase shaft and had to be rescued with ladders; firemen helped those who were afraid to go down the narrow rescue route.
The dramatic scenes showed how hard emergency teams found it to rescue people from buildings engulfed in flames and smoke.
Seven People Injured, Several Cars Damaged
Seven people were injured in the fire, reports said quoting officials. Four people were admitted to Max Hospital and three others were taken there for treatment from Madan Mohan Malviya Hospital.
Two women reportedly had breathing problems due to smoke inhalation. Hospital sources said that the patients were stable and those taken to Madan Mohan Malviya Hospital were discharged after treatment.
Several vehicles parked inside the showroom were also caught in the blaze. Officials said six cars were damaged by the fire.
No deaths were reported in the first updates. Officials also searched inside the building to make sure nobody was trapped.

Firefighters Rush to Spot, Blaze Brought Under Control
Delhi Fire Services received the emergency call at 3:47 pm and sent around 10 fire tenders to the spot initially. More firefighting resources and emergency personnel were called in as the situation developed.
Delhi Police, revenue department, Delhi Disaster Management Authority, ambulance services and Centralised Accident and Trauma Services (CATS) also took part in the emergency response.
The fire was put out and firefighters and police teams continued operations at the scene (checking premises for trapped people).
The incident also disrupted traffic movement around Saket Metro Station. People gathered near the showroom to watch the fire and video footage of it so police cleared the area and allowed emergency vehicles to move in.
Cause of Delhi Showroom Fire Yet to Be Confirmed
The cause of the fire has not yet been officially determined. Officials said they would have to conduct a thorough investigation to find out what started it all.
Some reports suggested an electrical short circuit, but authorities hadn’t confirmed this as the cause.
The incident has once again brought fire safety arrangements in commercial buildings, emergency evacuation routes and rescue of trapped people on upper floors into focus.
Firefighters, police and residents quickly got those trapped inside the showroom out. Authorities will determine what caused the fire and how much property was damaged as the investigation continues.
