Tourists frequently visit Krabi, Thailand, but nature reminds us that there's no comfort. In one particularly shocking story there, a couple who lived in a hotel woke up from sleep to see a cobra at the door to a room for a good few minutes. What started as a panic attack as a single incident, though, quickly developed into an encounter with one of the world’s most dangerous snakes such that it was even a terror to live through.
At 5 AM that day one partner suddenly jumped out of bed, crying and crying and yelling, “There are snakes in the bed.” His other partner thought this was like a ghost, maybe of some kind of nightmare. But if they were paying enough attention they heard the soothing voice: “A snake there's a snake slithering across my neck, a black cobra!” The panic was real. When they looked in the bed, a huge cobra appeared. Its metallic glow was loud enough to send shivers all the way down anybody’s spine.
Krabi is surrounded by landscapes, wetlands and tropical greenery. Cobras and other snakes are found naturally within these areas, when it comes to nature. Hotels and resorts are situated naturally in nature and visitors can expect to meet. At these buildings snakes could sneak into buildings to get shelter, food or cooler space. Bathrooms, drains, shaded places and so on are their primary hiding spots. In rare times, such incidents remind tourists of wildlife as a part of the environment and that wildlife is also part of the lifestyle.
The hotel staff usually go contact local snake catchers or animal control teams. And such experts are experts when they come to the city to safely remove snakes without getting them injured by them or by the guest. The emergency needs to be handled soon; cobras are deadly as well and may have violent behavior if provoked. Most hotels in Krabi and many regions in Thailand train staff that’ll respond calmly when wildlife encounter.
This incident indicates that while Krabi is beautiful it's also in close proximity to nature. Tourists do need to do:
- Stay on watch in the forest-side or rural hotels.
- Get up staff at work or any of those bizarre sounds and/or sightings.
- Have a low tolerance for trying to chase or handle snakes yourself.
- When possible to keep doors and windows closed at night.
The cobra in the hotel room in Krabi was terrifying, but also shows you how tourism and nature work well with each other. Snakes are nature in its own right in Thailand and, though a few bites we’re confronted, you have to keep animals safe and understand and appreciate what nature is about. For the couple, it would be a wake-up call they’d never forget.
