Trump arrived in Beijing at a moment in time when the attention of the world became increasingly polarised over US-China relations, which were already an important element in global markets, supply chains and strategic partnerships. It is also one of the most targeted diplomatic meetings of the year.

Trump will most likely have key meetings with China’s leader, Xi Jinping, and China’s top officials on the ground. They will cover a whole range of trade relations, tech restrictions, and regional security and cooperation on international economic stability. As both partners are considering tariffs, competition in semiconductor technology and manufacturing, and military manoeuvres in the Indo-Pacific, the visit comes at a moment of heightened tension.

Those meetings' results, according to analysts, may have far-reaching consequences for global diplomatic and economic flows in the coming months. Both sides' leaders have said attempts to make things right are underway. Yet they do not fully agree on every strategic topic. The emphasis will likely be on trade and investment under pressure as countries remain wary with respect to the U.S.

The arrival of Trump also puts more emphasis on broad political issues. Wars worldwide, supply chain problems and fears of a weak economy in other parts of the globe continue to be the main emphasis now. Beijing’s security status had already significantly improved in the months leading up to the US President’s arrival, and the authorities started to tighten the cordon around massive government buildings and diplomatic centres.

The visit deserves international media attention because of whether it will lead to major developments in the financial marketplace and foreign policy. Both states will likely seek cooperation as they compete fiercely over space such as artificial intelligence, defence technology, electric vehicles and international trade power.

Most importantly, they fear that the visit might lead to any relaxation in trade tensions or the establishment of new agreements in matters like tariffs and market access. Trade tension between Washington and Beijing has historically disrupted global trade and caused instability in international exchange markets between countries. But the talk may also be about regional security questions in fields such as the South China Sea, Taiwan and the broader Indo-Pacific strategy.

Even in the current crisis, open communication between the two countries is still necessary to maintain world stability, according to diplomatic analysts. Trump will also trade with other leaders in the two major economies and the global economy through business and diplomatic exchanges on the business and diplomatic levels, where he will closely monitor developments with leading business and public policy representatives as part of the trip.

The visit is a symbolic, if not a material, event, political analysts insist. Both sides continue to battle to keep the rivalry in check and stifle escalating conflict. And it is the truth that any meeting, in the next two days, can give hope to global investors or foreign governments with a joint statement or a shared policy vision of some sort.

The output that follows from the sensational visit will decide not only what we will do with American-China relations in due course, but also that there will be no doubt on which geostrategic order both Asia and the world will be formed.
