Authorities in Dubai have dismissed viral rumors claiming that Israel was planning a terrorist attack on the iconic Burj Khalifa in order to blame Iran.
The speculation spread widely on social media after an Iranian official allegedly warned of a “September 11-style” plot targeting the world’s tallest building. However, fact-checks and on-ground updates quickly debunked the claims, showing no evidence to support the alarming narrative.
Videos circulating online from Downtown Dubai around 8:30 p.m. local time showed normal evening scenes, with residents and tourists continuing their routines around the Burj Khalifa area. Restaurants, malls and nearby attractions remained open, and crowds appeared calm, contradicting the rumors of any imminent threat.
Observers and fact-checkers pointed out that many of the videos and images used in viral posts were either old clips or unrelated stock footage. No official warnings or security alerts were issued by UAE authorities regarding any planned attack.
The rumors emerged against the backdrop of heightened tensions in the Middle East following regional military exchanges earlier in February that briefly affected sites in the UAE. Despite those incidents, officials stressed that the recent viral claims lacked any credible evidence and originated primarily from a single Iranian source.
Authorities in the United Arab Emirates have also reiterated strict laws against spreading false information online. Under UAE regulations, individuals who deliberately spread misinformation or panic-inducing fake news could face fines of up to 200,000 dirhams.
Officials urged residents and social media users to rely on verified sources and avoid sharing unconfirmed reports that could create unnecessary fear.
Meanwhile, Dubai has continued normal operations. Flights and daily activities resumed as scheduled on March 17, and the city’s tourism and business hubs remained active.
The incident highlights how misinformation can quickly spread during times of geopolitical tension, prompting authorities to emphasize responsible online behavior and the importance of verifying information before sharing it.
